Funding Opportunities:

·         Applications are being accepted for grants from New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming, administered by the OMG Center for Collaborative Learning, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Up to 10 grants of $100,000 each over two years will support junior investigators from needy communities who projects focus on one of the foundation’s priorities: childhood obesity; coverage; human capital; pioneer; public health; quality/equality; and vulnerable populations

·         The Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund, administered by Cities of Service with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to help cities use volunteering to tackle pressing local challenges. Grant sizes will range from $25,000 to $100,000 with larger amounts researved for cities with multiple projects. Any mayor whose city is a member of the Cities of Service coalition is eligible to apply on behalf of the city and its partners.

·         The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

·         The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

The Investor Protection Trust and Investor Protection Institute recently surveyed 756 state securities regulators, financial planners, healthcare professionals, social workers, adult protective services, law enforcement officials, elder law attorneys and academics, responding to questions posed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington. The issue of financial elder abuse has been called an epidemic.

Elder justice advocates in California are calling for reform on laws protecting seniors from potential abuse by in-home supportive services workers. Last year, about two out of every three felon caretakers detected by the state were granted waivers by their elderly and disabled clients.

A 20-year-old caregiver at Golden Oaks Retirement community was taken into custody after a resident discovered her credit card missing and was being used at several shopping locations. Deputies believe there may be additional victims who may be unaware their credit cards or check books are missing.

Five years ago, a Kenyan woman was filmed beating a 90-year-old man and was arrested on charges of abuse, assault and reckless endangerment. Before she saw her day in court, the suspect fled to Africa, hiding there for years until Kenyan police caught up with her. Authorities were able to extradite her back to Baltimore, where she faces the American court system.

A new program, serving Barry and Lawrence counties, will help adult caregivers prevent scammers from targeting their elderly parents. The Home Instead Senior Care office in Joplin, a provider of non-medical in-home care services for seniors, is offering tools to help senior citizens be aware of and prevent scammers from jeopardizing their life savings and independence.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with elder abuse and assault on a female, and interfering with emergency communication. He is accused of assaulting a 91-year-old elderly woman by grabbing her by both arms and leaving her bruised. He allegedly then disconnected the phone to prevent her from calling 911.

A couple is filing a federal lawsuit against nine defendants, including Adult Protective Services. They claim that when an accusation of elder abuse was made against them, their father was forcibly removed from their care without due process and placed in the care of a friend, where he died two months later.

The estate of an 82-year-old woman killed at a Rock Hill assisted living home last year is suing the home and two employees, saying that the woman’s death could have been prevented. She was found dead  in her shower the day after she reported to staff and police that someone had been forging her checks. A nurse’s aide later confessed to killing the woman.

A Spartanburg woman was arrested after police said she neglected her elderly, bed-ridden mother, leaving her to lie in her soiled diapers and bed. Police found the suspect’s mother lying in her urine-soaked diapers and bed with bed sores, a rash on her neck, bruises on her arm and her oxygen tube was clogged with mucus.

A senior carer at a nursing home routinely drugged six dementia patients with unprescribed medication so she could get a good night’s sleep on the job, a court has heard. The drugs were so powerful that the poisoned patients, who previously would wander around during the night, fell into a sleep so deep they had to be taken to their beds in wheelchairs.

A 69-year-old resident of a care home in Suffolk reportedly punched a 92-year-old woman when she told him to be quiet. The force of the punch caused the victim to fall and hit a handrail. The man reportedly has advanced dementia, and is unfit to be interviewed.
