The federal government is providing more grants for nursing home background checks, but a federal investigation finds that a background check would likely flag some, but not all, of the aides who ultimately are disciplined.

A 56-year-old Orangevale woman was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse after allegedly assaulting her 81-year-old, live-in mother. The suspect allegedly went into her mother’s room and began physically assaulting her mother. The mother tried to call 911, but claims the suspect took the phone from her and punched her numerous times.

A 61-year-old woman got into a heated argument with her 94-year-old mother and is now being charged with elder abuse, resisting arrest and violating her probation.

Police have arrested an 18-year-old employee at the Woodside Terrace Senior Living complex in Redwood City on suspicion of burglary and elder abuse. Staff members told police that the employee had been seen exiting an elderly resident’s apartment and then discarding jewelry.

1 dead, 1 injured in Fla. Nursing home shooting

One person is dead and another is injured in a shooting at a northeastern Florida nursing home. Investigators believe it involved a husband and wife in their 70s. The man was pronounced dead and the woman suffered life-threatening injuries. Their names have not been released.

After receiving several complaints regarding care at the facility, a Volusia County nursing home has been placed on a national watch list of problem nursing facilities. A major complaint involves an alleged sexual abuse incident by a staff member on a resident.

Texas Adult Protective Services reports just over 58,000 elderly Texas living at home were victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation last year. A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services says that many victims never see restitution, and some  cannot event detect if they’ve been victimized.

A former caregiver who is on trial for assault, has denied bending the fingers and pinching the face of a 90-year-old war veteran who soiled himself at a care center for veterans. Instead, the suspect claims that his accuser made up the allegations because he stopped giving her rides to work and deprived her of a smoke break. The alleged victim has since died.

The Lancashire Constabulary yesterday confirmed the arrest of six care workers for alleged mistreatment and neglect of residents at Hillcroft Nursing Home, a thirty-six capacity. accommodation located in Slyne-with-Hest, Lancaster. Five nurses and one matron, who no longer work at the care home, have been accused of neglect, ill treatment and physical abuse.

A former caregiver targeted dementia sufferers and used their vulnerability to steal thousands.  The victims and their families feel the perpetrator has been given a slap on the wrist, as she has managed to avoid jail time. Instead she will work 280 unpaid hours and will no long be allowed access to the elderly through her work.

A watchdog has concluded that Shouldham Hall Nursing Home is still failing to meet basic care standards after its latest inspection. In February, the Care Quality Commission said the home at Shouldham, owned by the Holly Care Group, had failed to meet nine essential quality standards and staff were failing to protect the people in their care.

The number of allegations of abuse against vulnerable adults in the Southern Board area, which includes Dungannon District, have more than tripled in the past three years. A spokesperson for the Southern Board said a new computerized system had been introduced in July to improve the reporting of adult safeguarding activity

Funding Opportunities:

  • The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.
