State health officials are investigating allegations that a nurse’s aide assaulted an 84-year-old resident of a Fairfield nursing home. The Connecticut Post reports that Tina J. Blake of Bridgeport was charged Monday with cruelty to persons, third-degree assault on a victim over 60 and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Banoff, President & CEO of The Jewish Home, a premiere provider of senior health services in Conn., participated in a Panel on Elder Abuse. The Briefing was organized by the White House to address Administration Initiatives in the Area of Elder Abuse, the Affordable Care Act; Medicare/Medicaid and Home and Community Based Services.

A group of 12 senior actors have been gathering at the Danvers Council on Aging for rehearsals of their upcoming play, “Breaking the Silence: Voices of Hope.” Participants hope that the play will be a source of hope for those who are victims and for those who see abuse situations and want to seek appropriate help but don’t know where to turn.

A woman was arrested and charged with six counts of the Class D felony of financial exploitation of the elderly. According to a warrant request filed by Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver, a series of six checks were obtained under false pretenses.

A man had been accused by a social worker of abusing his disabled sister. Allegations in the police report stated that his sister did not know where her money was going and that the suspect was withholding it from his sister. After voluntarily answering questions at the police department, the man was released and never arrested. Police confirm that he was fully cooperative and that the case has been suspended because of a lack of evidence.

The Provo Police Department is getting $400,000 in federal money to expand services to senior adult domestic violence victims. The grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women will be spread out over three years. It aims to improve the skills of victim advocates, law enforcement officers, judges and other community members who work with victims.

The federal Office on Violence Against Women has awarded the Provo Police Department $400,000 to enhance training related to protecting senior citizens from crime. Provo Police Chief Rick Gregory said the three-year grant is aimed at improving understanding and response of advocates, law enforcement law officers, prosecutors, judges and others in the community dealing with elder abuse and fraud issues in Utah County.

Fighting crime against the elderly is about to get a big boost in Provo. The Provo Police Department was recently awarded a $400,000 grant from the federal Office on Violence Against Women. The grant will be used to provide training to law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges and community members on how to recognize and report elder abuse. According to a 2010 census report from the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Provo has the sixth-fastest-growing senior population in the country, meaning a large portion of the population is vulnerable to crime against seniors.

A man suspected of neglecting his elderly mother so severely that she died was arrested by Seattle police Monday, a day after what would have been her 90th birthday. He’s been booked into the King County Jail on investigation of manslaughter. The man’s mother, whose previous body weight had been 90 pounds, died weighing 58 pounds.

Laura Tamblyn Watts, a lawyer and senior fellow at the Canadian Centre for Elder Law, said research shows one in 12 seniors will experience financial abuse. Given how under-reported the problem is, she suspects the actual figure is one in eight.

A Toronto nursing-home worker convicted of sexually assaulting an elderly female resident is serving a 12-month jail sentence for the crime. Leonid Kozlov, 47, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the 71-year-old woman, who suffers from severe dementia, after he was caught by a co-worker with his pants halfway down his legs, pressed against the woman’s back. Advocates for seniors say the sentence doesn’t do the crime justice.

The scale of the challenge to reduce the use of anti-psychotic drugs by people with dementia may be under-estimated, according to researchers from Aston University and the University of East Anglia, working with NHS Kent and Medway. There is a key public health challenge to reduce the prescribing of anti-psychotic drugs to people with dementia as they are thought to be associated with up to 1,800 deaths a year.

A 61 year old women with dementia went missing late Monday afternoon from Ledbetter Beach after walking away from her caregiver. Santa Barbara Police Officers immediately responded to the beach and started looking for the women after receiving the 911 call. Because the women was wearing a Project Lifesaver transmitting device, Police notified Santa Barbara Sheriff's dispatch to enlist the help of Search and Rescue teams equipped with specialized GPS tracking equipment. The woman was found with a police helicopter.

Police are looking to help find a missing elderly man with dementia who left a home in northwest Calgary on Wednesday and hasn’t been seen since. He was last seen at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday behind the wheel of a black Honda Civic.

Funding Opportunities:

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.
