Northport man charged with murder, abuse and neglect in death of elderly mother

A Northport man was arrested after being indicted on charges including murder that stem from his elderly mother’s death in September 2011. He is accused of not giving appropriate physical care to his mother and misappropriating her assets as her caregiver. He was indicted on charges of murder, manslaughter, abuse and neglect of an elder and exploitation of assets by the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury following an investigation by the Northport Criminal Investigation Division with assistance from the Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit.

Two men face a felony count each of inflicting injury on an elder adult after a witness says they assaulted an 83-year-old homeless woman at a bus stop at 4am Saturday morning. The initial police report stated that the two men had been drinking, and became agitated at the 83-year-old for refusing to eat with them.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office is hosting a community forum with the San Francisco Police Department and Adult Protective Services where they’ll educate seniors on how to protect themselves from commons financial scams in the area.

Calling it a form of chemical restraint, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and advocates for the elderly Tuesday blasted the practice of prescribing antipsychotic drugs for dementia patients in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. This type of "off-label" use has not been approved by the FDA. These drugs can cause excessive sedation and unresponsiveness and can increase the risk of stroke and death in fragile, elderly patients, Blumenthal said.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal was in Hartford on Tuesday to highlight efforts to crack down on a form of elderly abuse involving the over-prescribing of antipsychotic meds to dementia patients. Although he noted off-label prescribing is not an illegal practice, Blumenthal said it’s often dangerous and even deadly when it’s used as a first response to agitated dementia patients.

Court Watch: Woman Gets Probation in Elder Abuse Case

A woman has been placed on 30 months of probation after her conviction on a charge neglecting her 82-year-old mother from Naperville in 2009. She pled guilty in June to criminal neglect of an elderly person for failing to provide hygienic care. In addition to her probation, the woman will perform 100 hours of community service, undergo a psychological evaluation and pay $2,450 in fines.

SALT Council looking to educate law enforcement officers

The SALT Council seeks to educate law enforcement members regarding identifying and addressing abuse against senior citizens. The council requests assistance from government and non-government organizations, for both financial and public support for a program offered through the National Clearinghouse for Abuse in Later Life.

A Leflore County grand jury has indicted a former employee at Golden Age Nursing Home in Greenwood on seven counts of illegally obtaining drugs while on duty. The woman is accused of taking painkillers from residents.

Rural Kahoka woman found guilty of elder abuse in case involving her mother

A rural Kahoka woman was found guilty of elder abuse in the first degree after a five-day trial. The woman could spend between 10 to 30 years in the Department of Corrections after she was found to have neglected her elderly mother. The home where the woman cared for her elderly mother did not have a working shower or toilet, and was found to have about 40 animals inside. Conditions were filthy, and the woman’s mother had to have her left leg amputated because of infection, due in part from a rat chewing at her foot.

A Tulsa nursing home cited for more than 40 violations during inspections in 2010 and 2011 (including failure to protect residents from abuse, failure to provide pain medications and other treatments as ordered, failure to adequately treat bed sores, failure to provide sufficient staffing and failure to provide supervision to prevent accidents) has moved all its patients to different facilities and plans to sell the home.

Florida’s federally-designated disability rights advocacy group sued one of the country’s largest brain-injury centers, alleging the facility is blocking its efforts to probe complaints of recent patient mistreatment. The Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation prevented an investigator from interviewing witnesses and from visiting locations on campus where alleged abuse occurred, according to the lawsuit, filed by Disability Rights Florida in U.S. District Court in Tampa.

A woman with severe dementia was supposed to be on round-the-clock observation when she was able to wander away from a New York City hospital. She was found 5 hours later with several bruises after an apparent fall or beating.

The son of a dementia patient says she walked out of a Bronx hospital and was found two miles away, with severe bruises. The patient’s son told the Daily News that his mother was supposed to be under constant watch, but Montefiore Medical Center informed him that a surveillance camera caught her leaving unsupervised.

Funding Opportunities:

  • The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.
