A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to rape an elderly woman. He fled the scene before authorities arrived, but was eventually found and arrested, and held on $1 million bail. The suspect has been charged with attempted forcible rape and elder abuse

Detectives from the Moorpark Police Station arrested a 40-year-old man in Simi Valley Thursday for suspicion of attempted rape and elder abuse. The suspect, who knows the victim, allegedly forced the victim into a residence and attempted to rape her before fleeing the scene.

Porterville police say a man assaulted his mother, who ended up in the hospital. Adult Protective services confirmed the assault allegations, reporting the instance to the police. The suspect was booked on suspicion of elder abuse.

It could be almost a year until the state launches a new system of criminal background checks on applicants to nursing homes. The program still is not online, and the state's federal grant funding for the project was extended until next September

Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed a new state agency -- the Adult Protective Services Unit -- to replace the Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Human Services, which has failed to investigate many cases of abuse and neglect that led to the deaths of disabled adults who lived at home.

County Sheriff Robert Pickell said his elder abuse and exploitation program, designed to prevent elder abuse and raise awareness of the problem, and make recommendations to the county’s Probate Court, has been reduced to just two employees due to budget cuts. The program started as a collaboration between the Sheriff’s Department, Probate Court, the county Prosecutor’s Office and the Center for Gerontology and has been funded with money from the county senior millage.

After a two-month investigation, a 33-year-old Turner woman has been arrested on charges relating to elder fraud. She has been accused of committing computer crime, theft, identity theft and fraudulent use of a credit card. The suspect allegedly fraudulently used an 81-year-old woman’s credit cards to buy $15,000 worth of food, sporting goods, lingerie, toys and cigarettes.

Nearly 200 people came to the chapel on Lynchburg College’s campus to raise their voice against the terrors of domestic violence.  The event, called “Breaking the Cycle: The Diffusion of Intergenerational Violence” taught participants about how children learn abusive behavior from their own families, perpetuating violence and acceptance of violence through generations of families. Speakers also discussed the rising trend of elder abuse.

To create awareness of elder financial exploitation, a University of Queensland team developed a program to enhance understanding of substitute and assisted decision making in the general community and among service providers and practitioners. A lead researcher said they were looking at misuse of enduring power of attorneys.

Belleville Police are looking for more possible victims in a fraud scheme that targeted seniors. An earlier investigation revealed that two seniors were bilked for a total of six thousand dollars after checks were stolen. A 31-year-old woman now faces 10 charges, including forgery, breach of trust and possession of property obtained by crime.

In recent years concerns have been raised that antipsychotics are being overprescribed for people with dementia. This is worrying because, as well as causing many unpleasant side effects (such as drowsiness), the long-term use of antipsychotics increases the risk of fatal conditions such as stroke. A recent study found that 15% of 1,051 people living with dementia in the community received a prescription for these drugs in the course of 2011.

Liberal Democrat AM for South Wales West Peter Black has signed up to Age Cymru's Rule Out Abuse campaign, which is calling for a new law to make sure tackling elder abuse is treated with the priority it deserves. Age Cymru says that Wales has the highest prevalence of elder abuse in the UK with a rate of six per cent.

An 11-year-old boy is facing felony charges of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon in the alleged beatings of his disabled mother. A judge will help determine whether the boy is competent to stand trial. The boy’s mother has since died of causes authorities say were unrelated to the injuries inflicted on her by her son. Before her death, she lived alone with her son, who had primary responsibility for her care.

Funding Opportunity in Safety and Health for Older Women

 

Funding through this request from the Department of Health and Human Service Office of Women’s Health is available for activities and events that enhance access to information and health care resources that promote the safety and health of older women (women 50+) in the United States and its affiliated territories. 

 

John Snow, Inc. (JSI) will be the lead contractor for administration of this RFP.  OWH contracted with JSI to provide general program support to its Central Office and ten Regional Offices on Women’s Health to manage regional health projects and activities in women’s health in the ten HHS regions.
