Pima County Sheriff's Department arrested a suspect for stealing jewelry from an elderly woman. The suspect is one of the victim's caregivers. Authorities across the country agree financial, physical and emotional abuse and neglect of seniors is drastically under reported.

Sacramento County's Elder Death Review Team saw a number of cases in the last fiscal year that were the result of that lack of knowledge. Suspected neglect at home was the single biggest reason for a case review by the team, ahead of gap in service and suspected homicide, which was last with 10 percent of the eight cases reviewed.

James Bartley Accused of Beating Elderly Woman in Chinatown

San Francisco police tracked down the man they say viciously attacked a 94-year-old woman as she walked through Chinatown in broad daylight. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, battery, elder abuse, and criminal threats. Police say the woman was crossing the street when the suspect allegedly approached her from behind and punched her in the back of the head for no apparent reason. The woman fell to the ground and hit her head; she was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with a possible fractured skull and life-threatening injuries

 The number of elder-abuse complaints to state investigators has grown 22 percent since 2007, members of a Senate committee heard Tuesday. The temporary committee is looking into ways the state can curb instances of physical, mental and financial abuse suffered by Georgians.

A grand jury has indicted a Centerville couple accused of defrauding an elderly man with dementia in what authorities say is one of the biggest fraud cases to hit the community. According to the indictment the couple allegedly defrauded the man of about $182,000 between February and August, but more charges are expected. Police say the couple took about $500,000 total from the 80-year-old man.

Deputies in north-central Idaho are still investigating a dispute that left an elderly man with a stab wound and his elderly wife with gunshot wounds to her hand and hip. The Idaho County sheriff’s deputy told the Lewiston Tribune that the mental condition of the 77-year-old wife will likely determine whether charges are filed. Officials believe the wife has dementia, and she is now living at a long-term care facility.

State investigators have completed their investigation of an Arlington nursing home where a FOX 4 exclusive report shed light on alleged abuse. The placement of a hidden camera by a resident’s daughter resulted in the arrest of a nursing aide for assault and now a 400-page report from a state investigation into the Heritage Oaks Nursing Center. Because of the report, four employees were suspended indefinitely, including the center’s administrator.

Lubbock’s Adult Protective Services hosted an all-day seminar on financial exploitation, revealing that in 2011 the state of Texas reported 1,118 financial exploitation cases. The same year, Texas received 77,722 complaints of abuse and neglect and exploitation.

A woman accused of nursing home abuse is expected to enter a plea in court today.  She is one of four people accused of abusing a paralyzed patient at Chandler Health and Rehab in Alabaster. The patient's family installed a hidden camera when they suspected the abuse.

A Park Rapids assisted living facility was ordered to beef up its alarm system after a dementia patient was found wandering along busy Highway 34. Care Age Country Home’s alarm and other safeguards were determined by the Minnesota Department of Health to be inadequate in warning staff to the man’s wandering tendencies.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

    • Cisco and TechSoup: Applications to receive donations of Cisco networking-solutions software, through a program sponsored by Cisco and TechSoup. Organizations receive equipment and hardware necessary to create a functioning network, and free technical support for five years from SmartNet, a Cisco-authorized technical-support organization.     • Daily Points of Light Awards Program: Nominations for the Daily Points of Light Awards Program, which former President Clinton reintroduced in January 1998 to honor people and organizations engaged in exemplary volunteer work and community service.
