Fresno woman arrested on 224 felony charges

Deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Fresno woman on 224 counts of identity theft and burglary charges. The investigation began in March 2012 when deputies investigated a financial elder abuse case in which a care provider was suspected of stealing checks and credit cards from an elderly client. As the investigation continued, the Fresno woman was implicated as the primary suspect in the investigation, as well as several other crimes at multiple locations between Visalia and Sacramento.

Students and faculty gathered in the Titan Student Union at Cal State Fullerton Saturday to attend the 13th annual Violence Prevention Conference that reported on trends in elder abuse. This year’s conference, titled Voices of the Victims: Abuse Across the Lifespan, featured a host of speakers that included Orange County Superior Court Judge Nancy Wieben Stock, community educator Robert Diaz, and authors Julia Chadwell and Alyce La Violette, who have both written about domestic violence.

A woman whose horses were seized from her La Cresta property in 2011 because of alleged neglect is now facing a felony elder abuse charge in connection with a senior citizen. The woman is to answer a charge of great bodily injury or death on an elder, with sentence-enhancing allegations of committing a serious felony and inflicting bodily injury on a person older than 70.

Pair arrested on suspicion of elder abuse

A pair of Napa residents was booked into the Napa County jail Sunday afternoon on suspicion of elder abuse and assault and battery, police said. Officers were called out on report of an assault, and on arrival learned that the couple had been in an argument with an elderly person, during which both suspects allegedly struck and injured the victim.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office
hosted and co-sponsored a daylong training seminar entitled “Elder Abuse: The Need for Coordinated Community Response.” The training was organized and sponsored by The Riverside County Abuse Later in Life Partners which is composed of the DA’s Office, county Department of Public Social Services, Riverside Police Department, and Alternatives to Domestic Violence.

A former Tulare City Fire captain entered a no contest plea to elder abuse charges stemming from allegations he took money from his aunt’s benefits. The man is subject to a one year sentence in jail. His sentencing hearing was set for Nov. 26, a day before he’s to turn himself over to federal authorities on additional charges stemming from the same incident.

State regulators have fined a nursing home in Centerville $8,000 after a woman who couldn't breathe died in front of family members. The 64-year-old woman was under a doctor's order to have her airway suctioned periodically to clear phlegm, but regulators say the Golden Age Nursing and Rehabilitation Center failed to do that before her death.

State troopers arrested a personal care home provider after a blind dementia patient wandered away from her room and was found dead in a nearby creek Wednesday morning. According to a criminal complaint, the suspect was charged with felony neglect of a care dependent person and involuntary manslaughter.

The Burnaby Multicultural Society provides a variety of services for newcomers and people in need because of language barriers or lack of information with community resources. This workshop is aimed at bringing attention to the elderly and caregivers about ways to keep oneself safe from abuse, as well as resources for help.

An elderly man with dementia is in police custody in connection with the death of a woman in an East Vancouver care home after reportedly pushing an 84-year-old woman. The woman later died due to her injuries sustained in the fall.

Elderly people are more vulnerable since the Canterbury earthquakes, with more abuse and neglect incidents reported. The community health nurse says that since the Canterbury earthquakes there have been cases where a family member has "intimidated or stressed" an older person into letting them take over their claim with the Earthquake Commission (EQC).

A nursing home is under fire after hidden cameras captured patients being slapped and restrained under chairs, having their hair pulled and being held down as medication was forced into their mouths. 11 care workers were sentenced after admitting 38 charges of neglect and abuse. Six were jailed between two years and six months, while the others received suspended sentences.

An elderly woman battling dementia died Sunday after she was found in a parking lot during a frigid night. The woman was a resident of a nearby apartment complex, and had left her home dressed only in nightclothes in the freezing weather.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • Google Grants: Applications for the Google Grants program, administered by Google. Nonprofit groups can apply to receive at least three months of free advertising on Google's Web site to promote their missions. Additional information and applications are available on the Web site.   • Amie’s Place Foundation: Applications for grants for nonprofit organizations that provide direct services for critically and chronically ill children and adults, veterans, frail older adults, and women and children fleeing domestic violence who risk losing their pets because no one is there to help.

  • Cisco and TechSoup: Applications to receive donations of Cisco networking-solutions software, through a program sponsored by Cisco and TechSoup. Organizations receive equipment and hardware necessary to create a functioning network, and free technical support for five years from SmartNet, a Cisco-authorized technical-support organization. Cisco will donate other networking components as well. Applications and further information are available on TechSoup's Web site.   • Daily Points of Light Awards Program: Nominations for the Daily Points of Light Awards Program, which former President Clinton reintroduced in January 1998 to honor people and organizations engaged in exemplary volunteer work and community service.
