Roughly 14 percent of people over 71 have some level of dementia, according to the National Institutes of Health. For those in their 90s, the rate rises to 37.4 percent. This article gives advice to family members of people with dementia who want to manage their own finances as long as possible.

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association (APABA) and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, held their third Elder Law Day at the Angelus Plaza, a low-income senior residential facility in Los Angeles.  The half-day event consisted of an elder fraud prevention workshop focusing on Medicare fraud prevention and free legal assistance to elders in completing advance health care directives, power of attorney for finance, and simple statutory wills

A 77-year-old woman has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the death of her husband. The woman’s family claims that she has dementia, and that she suffered physical abuse at the hands of her husband for years.

There are more than 15,000 older adults in Lethbridge and it is reported at least 10 per cent of them have experienced some form of elder abuse. The new coordinator at Lethbridge Elder Abuse Response Network (LEARN) vows to help connect seniors with the appropriate resources to prevent and end abuse.

U.N. Urges Protection For The Elderly As World Grays

A report released by the U.N. Population Fund warns that soon Japan will not be the only country with over 30 percent of its population over 60. The report urges governments to summon the political will to protect the elderly and ensure they can age with good health and dignity and minimize the risk of elder abuse.

Lawmaker to File Suit Charging Abuse of His Disabled Son

After his disabled son’s alleged abuser was able to find another job as a caregiver, a state assemblyman plans to file suit against AHRC Nassau, a local chapter of the nation’s largest provider of services to people with developmental disabilities. The company fired the alleged abuser, but no charges were filed and police were never notified.

A dementia patient has been jailed after murdering his caregiver for rejecting his sexual advances. He has been sentenced to 18 years with no non-parole period, but the judge said it is likely he will die within six years because he has dementia.

Funding Opportunities:

  • The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.
