Jefferson County deputies are looking for a Birmingham man accused of taking more than $40,000 from his elderly relative. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the accused 44-year-old man was visiting an elderly family member who was living in a nursing home. Over time, he convinced the nursing home staff that he was in charge of his relative's finances.

State bills target elder abuse, theft

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and two local state senators Monday urged Gov. Jerry Brown to sign three bills aimed at helping to prevent elder abuse, including financial elder abuse. The article states that SB 543 would ensure that theft from an elder is a “qualifying prior offense” when sentencing a person to prison, removing an ambiguity in the law to treat elder theft with the same seriousness as any other form of theft.

Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign three bills that are intended to prevent elder abuse. KNX 1070’s Tom Reopelle reported that SB543 would ensure criminals who commit crimes against seniors are prosecuted and sentenced to the fullest extent of the law, and another bill, AB140 would modernize the definition of undue influence.

Jury convicts San Jose embezzler who spent loot on lavish lifestyle
After siphoning more than half a million dollars from a friend, Vincent Eppstein wrote a check to himself for the last 60 cents in her bank account and scrawling in the memo line, "Have a nice life.' Eppstein now faces up to 11 years in prison after being convicted of three counts of grand theft and one count of fraud against a dependent adult, all felonies.

The elected leaders asked the governor to sign Senate Bill 543, a bill introduced by Block that would add elder theft as a qualifying prior offense for charging and sentencing purposes. Wyland said the state’s definition of undue influence dated back to 1877, and AB 140 redefines it as excessive persuasion.

A certified nursing assistant employed by Broomfield Skilled Nursing was back in court Thursday, where a judge ruled there was probable cause to charge him with seven counts of sexual assault and crimes against at-risk adults against two victims, who were staying at the nursing home at the time.

During a court case this past week, Coffee County Circuit Court Judge Venessa Jackson ordered the Beech Grove woman to serve two years in prison for the “false imprisonment” of her mentally ill sister in December 2011. 47-year old Tracy Lynn Carman-Thacker was convicted in July of willful abuse, neglect and exploitation of an elder and false imprisonment of her 62-year-old sister

After a six-month investigation, police have arrested Storm Lake 32-year-old woman on a charge of dependent adult abuse - alleging the suspect stole her mother's Social Security income to spend on herself and denied her mother needed dialysis treatment. Police allege that the daughter traveled to a nursing home facility in Rock Island, Illinois in March of 2013 and removed her mother from the facility and brought her to Storm Lake.

A Deer Lodge woman has pleaded guilty to felony elder abuse and exploitation and theft of public assistance after swindling her father. Authorities in court records say banking records show Harrington was handling her father's finances and failed to make mortgage payments since September 2011.

Englewood cops nab woman wanted for alleged elder abuse
Police believed 54-year-old woman had been hiding out in the New Jersey-New York area following the Sept. 11 incident where she allegedly beat her 82-year-old mother-in-law, causing head trauma and knocking out several of the elderly woman's teeth. Last month ended their search Monday when cops arrested her in the Bronx, Detective Capt. Tim Torell told Patch.

The caretaker of a blind dementia patient who wandered away and drowned in a creek near a central Pennsylvania personal care home has pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter. Authorities say a 70-year-old woman apparently wandered away from the Sleepy Hollow Personal Care Center sometime before her body was discovered in the creek about 100 yards away on Oct. 24.

Woman, 89, found living in dire conditions hospitalized
An 89-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions was hospitalized Monday, the article stated. Officials said she was found with what appeared to be several bite marks, and police said the woman was hoarding many items, and rotten food and garbage was found throughout the home, causing a foul smell.

Daughter who declared bankruptcy must repay $142, 742
An elderly woman who transferred funds to her daughter so that she could qualify for Medicaid cannot claim that she retained ownership of the funds when her daughter declared bankruptcy. In April 2010, the daughter transferred the money to a trust designed to protect the assets from creditors, but the entire corpus of the trust was used to purchase an annuity to benefit the daughter, the author states.

Pleasant Prairie man faces abuse charges stemming from mother’s death
A woman’s son has been charged with causing her death more than a year ago. Officers who went to the emergency room found her lying in bed, moaning. The smell in the room was so strong an officer had to use a mask to breathe, according to court records. The officer said she had multiple bed sores and appeared to be malnourished.

The owner of a small north Florida adult care home is facing charges that she abused her patients. Authorities say she handcuffed a disabled adult, causing wounds on the woman's wrists that weren't treated.

The owner of an adult care home in Williston was charged Thursday on allegations of mistreatment of residents, including failure to provide beds, restraining one with handcuffs, abusing residents and other crimes. She was arrested after a collaborative investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Sheriff’s Office.

Richmond woman charged with abusing disabled adult, her baby
A Richmond woman was formally charged Wednesday with two counts of battery for allegedly abusing a mentally disabled adult and the adult’s baby, both of whom had been living with her. The adult victim told police she had been beaten almost daily for two of the five years she had lived in the home, forced to eat soap, animal feces and a cleaning wipe, and also was made to lick the living room carpet and the bathroom floor.
