SEACUS will be hosting an Elder Abuse Prevention Conference on Thursday, Nov. 8, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Manor House. The conference is for senior citizens in the community who want to learn how to protect themselves from predators. Presenters include The Attorney General's Office, Attorney Grant Walker, officer Sheri O'Neil from the Safford Police Department, Tammy Evans from National Bank and a SHIP Medicare counselor. A 45-year-old Fresno woman was arrested earlier this week for 200-counts of theft and burglary involving seniors. She is also accused of using personal information to steal money from the elderly. Clovis Adult Education is offering a special class this fall to show people how to recognize and prevent elder abuse.

A Napa man and woman were arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of elder abuse and battery inflicting serious bodily injury, according to an arrest summary from the City of Napa Police Department. The couple allegedly got into an argument with an elderly person, and it became physical. The two suspects are accused of striking the victim, causing injury.

A Southern California woman facing trial for animal cruelty is now charged with elder abuse for leaving her ailing 86-year-old mother outside on a chaise lounge for days. Investigators say the elderly woman was soaked in urine, covered with feces and had bleeding bedsores when she was brought to an Orange County hospital last month. The woman’s daughter will be arraigned on Nov. 29 for causing great bodily injury on an elderly person.

The S.A.F.E., Seniors Against Financial Exploitation, seminar was sponsored by Catholic Charities, Stanislaus Elder Abuse Prevention Alliance, WestAmerica Bank, The Congress of California Seniors, Walgreens and Verizon Foundation. Walgreens was on hand to provide flu shots and many area agencies and businesses had tables and displays set up to offer information. A series of speakers also touched on topics of concern to an aging population, ranging from elder abuse to financial issues.

A Watsonville man and his girlfriend were convicted this week on misdemeanor elder abuse charges, following a two week jury trial. However, the jury returned not guilty verdicts on felony charges. The victim testified that his son had slapped him, punched him in the abdomen, wrenched his arm behind his back, and called him profane names. He also said that his son’s girlfriend slapped him, grabbed his face and pulled his ears while calling him profane names. The victim passed away 13 days after giving his videotaped testimony.

A licensed physical therapist and his girlfriend were found guilty Monday of misdemeanor elder abuse against his late father, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said. The jury found the defendants not guilty on felony elder abuse, where circumstances or conditions likely to produce great bodily harm must be shown.

A Gainesville nursing home employee has been arrested, accused of slapping the head of a dementia patient who recently had brain surgery, according to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report. The victim, who is unable to control the use of his arms and legs and is either in bed or in a wheelchair, began flailing his arms and legs, trying to stand up. The suspect allegedly pushed him back into the wheelchair and hit him in the back of the head with an open hand.

Golden Age Skilled Nursing and Rehab, the nursing home that was recently fined $8,000 by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals – Health Facilities Division for failing to help a dying woman, has a long history of citations and violations. According to records made available from the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals website, and compiled by the Daily Iowegian, the Golden Age has received $56,675.50 in fines and 123 violations since Dec. 3, 1999, the date of the first record available online.

An Iowa nursing home has been fined $500 for not reporting possible sexual exploitation of a resident by an employee. The worker was accused of kissing the resident and having other sexual contact, and has been fired by the home administrator.

 An Iowa nursing home has been fined $500 for not reporting possible sexual exploitation of a resident by a home employee. The worker was accused of kissing the resident and having other sexual contact with him. The home administrator fired the workers, and told inspectors that she didn’t report the matter to the state because the relationship was consensual. Iowa law says that any consensual or nonconsensual sexual conduct between a patient and a caregiver must be reported to the state as abuse.

For 11 years, a man with a criminal history of burglary, forgery, arson, and criminal possession of stolen property told lie after lie to a 91-year-old Catholic priest, swindling him out of more than $500,000. The perpetrator pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny, and faces seven years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 12. Prosecutors could have pressed a higher felony charge against the thief, but the cleric was reluctant to testify, and is embarrassed and humiliated by what happened.

A Lakeport man has been arrested on several charges arising from allegations that he assaulted and threatened his girlfriend who is a dependent adult. The girlfriend lives in an apartment complex on Bevins Court that houses adults individuals who are county behavioral health clients. She reported the assault late with the help of a neighbor.

The husband of a 400-pound Detroit-area woman has been charged with abuse after her recent death. Authorities are accusing the suspect of allowing his wife to fester in a bed surrounded by her own waste. The 40-year-old Warren woman died of morbid obesity and other injuries last week. The suspect is charged with second-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult.

A vulnerable woman was left bleeding from her mouth after being attacked in the street by a 28-year-old woman who had been out drinking with friends. The woman was sentenced to a six-month community payback order, with a condition she completes 40 hours of unpaid work.

Police are searching for a missing man from Hartford who has Alzheimer's disease. He is described as a Hispanic male, 5’4” tall, weighing approximately 110 lbs. He has grey/black hair and brown eyes. He went missing from his home on Wednesday, October 31, between 11am and 2pm. He has gone missing twice before.

Leawood police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 70-year-old man who has been missing since 5 p.m. Tuesday. The elderly man has dementia and a heart condition. He is 5’7” tall and weighs 200 pounds with blue eyes and graying hair.

Cincinnati Police say they have found a missing 73 year old dementia.  The man was spotted sitting on a park bench at Clifton and McMillan Streets around 3 a.m. Thursday. He had left a home around 12:15 Wednesday, and was later reported missing.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • Google Grants: Applications for the Google Grants program, administered by Google. Nonprofit groups can apply to receive at least three months of free advertising on Google's Web site to promote their missions. Additional information and applications are available on the Web site.   • Amie’s Place Foundation: Applications for grants for nonprofit organizations that provide direct services for critically and chronically ill children and adults, veterans, frail older adults, and women and children fleeing domestic violence who risk losing their pets because no one is there to help.

  • Cisco and TechSoup: Applications to receive donations of Cisco networking-solutions software, through a program sponsored by Cisco and TechSoup. Organizations receive equipment and hardware necessary to create a functioning network, and free technical support for five years from SmartNet, a Cisco-authorized technical-support organization.   • Daily Points of Light Awards Program: Nominations for the Daily Points of Light Awards Program, which former President Clinton reintroduced in January 1998 to honor people and organizations engaged in exemplary volunteer work and community service. Awards are made in six areas: continuing relationships with caring people, safe communities, a healthy start for a healthy future, quality education for all, opportunities for young people to serve, and community mobilization.
