The preliminary hearing into the evidence against three of the four defendants in the fraud case involving Gold Country Lenders has been postponed until mid-March. The suspects allegedly engaged in a pattern of theft and fraud for over eight years, bilking investors of more than $2.3 million. Together they face dozens of charges of elder abuse, securities fraud, and conspiracy.

A nurse accused of providing shoddy care to a 77-year-old woman at a Placerville nursing home pleaded no contest Thursday to felony elder abuse and agreed to help prosecutors with the criminal case against her former supervisor. The elderly woman, whose devoted husband and family members visited her daily, deteriorated rapidly during her 13-day stay at the El Dorado Care Center in Placerville, court documents show.

A California nurse has pleaded no contest to felony patient abuse and agreed to help in the prosecution of her nursing home supervisor. The Alzheimer's patient, who was supposed to be constantly monitored, died of fecal impaction in 2008 after 13 days at the nursing home. The two suspects were charged with elder abuse, and also face a special allegation of inflicting great bodily injury, which adds five years to a prison sentence.

Representatives of Attorney General Kamala D. Harris told The Bee that the state will begin aggressively bundling more criminal cases statewide. In California and elsewhere, criminal prosecutions of nursing home workers or their employers have been rare, with allegations of abuse or neglect frequently handled in the civil courts.

A free workshop, "Be Wise: Prevent Fraud, Scams and Identity Theft," will be held in San Anselmo Town Hall at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The workshop is designed to help older adults prevent elder abuse and is presented by Marin FAST, or Financial Abuse Specialist Team, a program of Elder Financial Protection Network.

Buhl woman sentenced for stealing from elderly roommate

A 33-year-old Buhl woman who pleaded guilty to stealing from her 82-year-old roommate has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors say the perpetrator left the victim unable to afford her medications or insurance premiums. The perpetrator was ordered to pay $3,252.21 in restitution.

7.         MISSISSIPPI (Jackson), The Republic, November 2, 2012
Pearl River County couple charged in exploitation case

A Pearl River County couple has been indicted on a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult in a case involving a loss of over $100,000. The couple is accused of taking a vulnerable relative's Social Security check, annuity payment and other money over an 18-month period. They each face 10 years in prison.

 “Shattering the Silence on Elder Abuse” is the focus of a conference being sponsored by the Department of Social Work at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Wednesday.

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) Acting Director, Greg Olsen announced that his office has received a three-year, $1 million Elder Abuse Prevention Interventions Grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL) to initiate and test a program to combat financial exploitation and elder abuse in New York.

Grant to fund pilot program to combat elder abuse

Lifespan of Greater Rochester Inc. will be a key partner in a $1 million elder abuse prevention grant from the U.S. Administration for Community Living. The grant, which is coordinated by the New York State Office for the Aging, was given to test a program that combats financial exploitation and elder abuse in New York.

Convicted Criminals Become Employable by Nursing Homes

A new law takes effect November first allowing convicted criminals of offenses such as assault, battery and first degree robbery to work in nursing homes. The law changes what crimes would be considered barriers for employment in the nursing home industry. If seven years have passed since the completion of sentence for assault, battery, indecent exposure, or robbery, a nursing home may consider that individual for employment.

12.       SOUTH CAROLINA (Rock Hill), WRHI, November 1, 2012
Jurors convict Rock Hill woman in nursing home death

A Rock Hill woman will spend the rest of her life in prison with no possibility for parole after prosecutors say she killed one
of her patients at a Rock Hill nursing home. The victim’s body was found, badly bruised inside her shower almost a year ago. The perpetrator was arrested days later after officers connected her to a previous report of stolen checks worth $1,300.

Former Ruth Marie’s Country Home Caregiver Arrested for Abuse

A former caregiver of an assisted living facility in Jewett has been arrested on charges of injury to an elderly or disabled individual. In recent weeks, Adult Protective Services contacted Leon County investigators after receiving documentation of the alleged abuse between Lewis and an elderly and disabled patient inside an assisted living facility in Limestone County.

Grants helping Utah cope with growing elder abuse problem

Last year, Adult Protective Services and the Salt Lake City Police Department were awarded a $400,000 grant aimed at improving the understanding and response to elder abuse and exploitation. And last month, the Provo Police Department received a $400,000 grant of its own to improve response to crimes against adults over the age of 65.

After his daughter left his bills unpaid and helped herself to $20,000 of his money, an elderly man was forced to leave his retirement apartment in New Plymouth where he thought he would spend his last days.  The daughter was sentenced to 300 hours of community work. The judge said he would not make an order for reparation because the daughter, who was on a sickness benefit, had no ability to pay.

Easton woman sentenced to jail, probation for abuse

A rural Easton woman has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of probation for the mistreatment of a dependent adult at a nursing home. The woman reportedly placed an alarm cord around the neck of a man who was in a wheelchair and threatened to strangle him. She also reportedly pushed the man into his room and closed the door, leaving him unattended. The victim, who suffered from dementia, died about a month after the incident.

A Lake Andes man has been convicted of abusing a disabled adult, a felony, by a Charles Mix County jury on Wednesday. He faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison and/or a $4,000 fine.

A 35-year-old former caregiver was supposed to be taking care of a 32-year-old disabled man when she stripped in front of him and forced him to perform sex acts. The victim has the capacity of a 6-year-old. The woman was found guilty of rape, willful abuse, neglect and exploitation of a vulnerable adult. She could face between 8 and 30 years in prison when she is sentenced.

A Kissimmee woman with a history of dementia and wandering from home has disappeared again, according to Kissimmee police. The 45-year-old woman suffers from multiple medical conditions “and can become confused easily and forgets where she is or how to get home.” She was last seen on Wednesday, but her roommates did not realize she was gone until Thursday afternoon.

88-year-old missing Highland Township man with dementia found sleeping at neighbor’s house

A massive search in Highland Township ended happily today for an 88-year-old man with dementia who apparently walked away from his home Sunday night. He was found sleeping on the couch of a neighbor’s mobile home, and was in good condition when he was found.

A Gilbert woman suffered through anxiety and guilt as police searched for two days for her missing, 73-year-old mother who has advancing dementia. The story had a happy, but surprising, ending when police found the woman’s mother disoriented but unharmed in the backseat of her dark-blue Infiniti EX35 in Deming, N.M.
