St. Tammany SALT Council to provide Elder Abuse program

Louisiana law enforcement personnel will benefit from a certified Elder Abuse training program thanks to the efforts of the St. Tammany SALT Council and a successful fund-raising effort to underwrite the program.  The training program in February will bring eight teams of five instructors to St. Tammany Parish to become certified instructors in the federally-developed program.

An Eagan woman who worked as a personal-care attendant for a vulnerable adult in Eagan has been charged with financially exploiting the woman. The suspect is charged with financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, a gross misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine.

NJ Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Mentally Disabled Woman

Camden County officials say a Cherry Hill, New Jersey man accused of sexually assaulting a mentally disabled woman was arrested Friday. According to officials, the 53-year-old suspect was charged with first degree aggravated sexual assault and other related charges.

An upstate woman who was an administrator for an agency that served disabled people was convicted of stealing thousands of dollars from the agency’s clients. According to the Glens Falls Post-Star, 38-year-old Kimberly Breault, of Queensbury, was found guilty of 10 counts of petty larceny last week after a trial in Town Court.

 A woman who was an administrator for an agency that served disabled people has been convicted of stealing thousands of dollars from the agency's clients. The thefts occurred in 2008 and 2009. Between $4,000 and $6,000 was stolen from as many as 12 clients. The clients have been reimbursed by the agency.

A disabled mother finds herself in a tough situation and a victim of unusual circumstances. Her car was smashed by a man running from the law and now she's left with the bill. That victim is struggling now to foot the bill after her car was damaged in her own garage. Her insurance isn't covering it and the suspect is nowhere to be found.

A father accused of trying to kill his adult disabled son and then take his own life was arrested by police. The man told investigators he had gotten into a fight with his wife and was feeling "overwhelmed." He said he was the primary caretaker for his son, who has cerebral palsy, and didn't want to "burden anyone else" with having to take care of his son after he committed suicide, the report states. He said he "wanted them both to die."

Well-Known Spine Doctor Charged With Exploitation Of Vulnerable Adult

The Salt Lake County Attorney's Office has issued an arrest warrant for Dr. John Meadors, whose commercials can be seen on Utah television. During a visit Meador's clinic, Utah Spine and Disc, prosecutors say a disabled and vulnerable adult unknowingly signed contracts giving her a $6,000 credit line and charging her $5,200 for 20 treatments. The victim had only three treatments, and asked for a refund, but prosecutors say meadors refused. The doctor is charged with one felony count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

A Wausau woman is accused of stealing more than $38,000 from her disabled sister over a 10-year period to fund her gambling, smoking and drinking habits. She is charged with embezzlement, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

She reportedly has a developmental delay, suffers from epilepsy and had gone without her medication for two days.

Philadelphia police are asking for the public’s assistance in finding a missing 72-year-old man. According to police Tik Lam was last seen at his home on the 800 block of Locust Street on Tuesday, Nov. 13th around 4 p.m. Police say Lam suffers from dementia. He is 5-foot-4 with gray hair and brown eyes. He weighs about 125 lbs and was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt, black vest, jeans and black sneakers.

    • The American Bar Association has announced a further round of grants to be made in 2013 that will promote and support innovation in the delivery of civil legal aid.  These grants will go the state Access to Justice Commissions.  The grants will fund projects in seven critical areas of innovation: expanding limited scope representation and other models for affordable services; improving language access and eliminating implicit cultural bias; employing public libraries as point of access for legal aid; enhancing fundraising outside the legal community; creating partnerships with health care and social services providers, government agencies and other new partners; preserving access for low-income people as courts implement e-filing; and increasing web-based delivery of pro bono services for self-represented litigants.  Eligible entities are state Access to Justice Commissions, which are formal entities that bring together the highest level of the state's courts, organized bar, and other stakeholders to support the expansion of access to civil justice for low income and disadvantaged people.  Applications for Grants to Promote the Creation of new Access to Justice Commissions are due by February 15, 2013; applications for Innovation Grants are due on May 1, 2013.
