A Riverside man whose house was allegedly filled with explosives and booby traps has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts. He was charged with recklessly discharging a firearm, possessing a silencer, misdemeanor elder abuse and several sentence-enhancing allegations of using a weapon during a felony and being a habitual offender. Police found his mother severely injured inside the residence.

A San Juan Capistrano man pleaded not guilty Monday to three charges of elder abuse, including injuring and falsely imprisoning a senior citizen. He allegedly inflicted injury on an older adult, falsely imprisoned an elder or dependent adult by violence and dissuaded a witness by force, all felonies.

A bill that targets elder abuse has something behind it this time around that has kept it from becoming a law before – money. The bill, which was introduced in the state Senate Friday, would make it mandatory for individuals in certain professional fields to report suspected instances of elder abuse.

A longtime Maple Grove City Council member was charged with three felony counts, accused of using her power of attorney to raid the trust fund for her own benefit from 2009 until days before her father died on March 12, 2012. Prosecutors contend that she looted his father’s assets of $153,000, using it to pay credit card bills, business expenses and spa retreats, even the mortgage on the very house he willed to her.

The survey was suggested by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Around 10,000 older people are suffering abuse and most of it is going unreported, Junior Health Minister Kathleen Lynch has warned. She said the HSE received 2,302 reports of elder abuse in 2011 but even this 10% rise on 2010 disguised the real horror. Ms. Lynch was speaking yesterday at the launch of a new guide, 'Wellbeing and Dignity of Older People' (WeDO), that sets out the protections that should be in place for the elderly.

A Tilney All Saints man who stole more than £20,000 from a vulnerable adult over a period of almost three years has been jailed. He was sentenced to three years and three months in prison when he appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Monday. He had stolen from the man between May 2008 and January 2011 and used the victim’s bank card to withdraw cash for his personal use, as well as online shopping transactions and payments to mobile phone stores, electrical outlets, car breakdown centers and hire shops.

A convicted sex offender who fled the state after a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing a vulnerable adult has been sentenced to between 18 to 25 years in prison. The victim and the perpetrator were both patients at a mental health hospital when the abuse occurred.

- The American Bar Association has announced a further round of grants to be made in 2013 that will promote and support innovation in the delivery of civil legal aid. These grants will go to the state Access to Justice Commissions. The grants will fund projects in seven critical areas of innovation: expanding limited scope representation and other models for affordable services; improving language access and eliminating implicit cultural bias; employing public libraries as point of access for legal aid; enhancing fundraising outside the legal community; creating partnerships with health care and social services providers, government agencies and other new partners; preserving access for low-income people as courts implement e-filing; and increasing web-based delivery of pro bono services for self-represented litigants. Eligible entities are state Access to Justice Commissions, which are formal entities that bring together the highest level of the state's courts, organized bar, and other stakeholders to support the expansion of access to civil justice for low income and disadvantaged people. Applications for Grants to Promote the Creation of new Access to Justice Commissions are due by February 15, 2013; applications for Innovation Grants are due on May 1, 2013.

- The Office on Violence Against Women invited eligible parties to apply for a series of grants offered by their agency. The Enhanced Training and Services to End Violence Against and Abuse of Women Later in Life Program provides or enhances training and services to address elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking, involving victims who are 50 years of age or older.
