Corning man arrested on charges of elder abuse

A 32-year-old Corning man was arrested Monday evening after reportedly attacking his stepfather at a Valley Vista Drive residence in Corning. The 67-year-old stepfather has visible injuries, for which he was treated at the scene. The suspect was booked on charges of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.

Financial planner accused of elder abuse

A financial planner is accused of embezzling money from an 89-year-old client. He was arrested on February 19 at his business. He is accused of financial elder abuse and money laundering.

Former DeKalb school secretary sentenced in elder abuse case

A former DeKalb school secretary accused of preying on elderly and disabled adults was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday. She was found guilty of exploiting six elderly and disabled adults and was also ordered to pay more than $14,000 in restitution to one of the disabled victims.

Ga. Woman sentenced in elder abuse, fraud case

A DeKalb County woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for crimes against the elderly. She was sentenced Monday after being found guilty of abusing six disabled, elderly people over a five-year period. She was charged with neglect, exploitation, false imprisonment, forgery and 13 counts of identity fraud. DeKalb County District Attorney's officials say she took elderly people into her home, malnourished them and allowed them to live in squalid conditions. She also took money from the victims' bank accounts and signed their names on government checks without their permission

A former personal banker with an affinity for Louis Vuitton copped to bilking about $300,000 from a dementia-inflicted woman and was sentenced to up to nine years in prison Monday. He pleaded guilty to grand larceny and possession of stolen property in Manhattan Supreme Court in exchange for a sentence of three to nine years behind bars. The man’s victim died just weeks before he was arrested.

Con Artist Admits Stealing $300,000 From Elderly Dementia Victim

A con artist has admitted to stealing $300,000 from an elderly woman in Manhattan, according to a report from The New York Post on Monday, February 25. The man claimed to have targeted his 91-year-old victim while working at her bank in 2009. He convinced her and her family to condense separate checking accounts into one, and to allow him authority of oversight. The victim died shortly before the man was arrested.

A Rochester area nursing home worker has been charged with assaulting an 83-year old woman. The state Attorney General’s office reports they have surveillance tape of the suspect throwing chicken bones at a woman in the Park Ridge Living Center in Greece. The attack happened after the woman allegedly threw napkins at him in November 2012. The worker is also accused of slamming the wheelchair-ridden woman into a door. The suspect could face one and a third to four years in prison if convicted.

Riverside police say they've arrested a woman they believe beat and stabbed an 80-year-old woman, stole her car and broke into a neighbor's home and stabbed their dog. Officers say the 25-year-old suspect was arrested early Tuesday for investigation of attempted murder, home invasion robbery, burglary, animal cruelty and vehicle theft. The elderly victim is in serious but stable condition.

A 59-year-old woman recently arrested on larceny and money laundering charges spent nearly $250,000 from her disabled daughter's special needs trust on home improvements, appliances, weekend trips and mortgage payments, according to court documents. The suspect’s 26-year-old daughter suffers from cerebral palsy and lives in a group home in New Britain.

A known gang member was arrested Wednesday on robbery and attempted murder charges after snatching cash from a disabled man and pushing him and his wheelchair into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 192, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office said. Jose Mojica de la Rosa survived the attack uninjured on Saturday evening, but his 9-month-old Chihuahua, Lola, broke a leg when she was crushed beneath the overturned wheelchair, according to interviews Wednesday afternoon. In addition to attempted murder and robbery, the suspect is charged with abuse on a disabled adult, petit theft and animal cruelty. He remains held without bail in the Osceola County Jail.

A male nurse in southern New Jersey has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a quadriplegic man in his care and videotaping the incident. Prosecutors say the 34-year-old "catastrophically injured" victim, who was nonverbal and incapacitated and therefore unable to consent. The former nurse could face up to 40 years in prison at his May 17 sentencing

Troutdale man accused of raping disabled co-worker

A Troutdale man accused of raping a developmentally disabled woman was arrested Wednesday by Multnomah County sheriff's deputies. A grand jury indicted the suspect last week for the rape and sex abuse of a developmentally disabled co-worker in the back of his van, after he had offered to give her a ride to work.

Troutdale man accused of raping disabled woman

Multnomah County sheriff's deputies arrested a Troutdale man accused of raping a developmentally disabled woman. If convicted he faces as much as 20 years in prison. He is accused of raping the woman in his van after offering her a ride. The suspect calls the allegation a lie.

Jury Convicts Medicaid Fraudster

A man from Laramie County has been found guilty of multiple counts of Medicaid fraud. A jury found him guilty of fifteen felonies and a misdemeanor stemming from making false Medicaid claims. He had previously worked at the Developmental Resource Center in Cheyenne helping developmentally challenged and mentally disabled Medicaid patients. An investigation conducted by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit uncovered evidence he had unjustly inflated bills and even charged patients for services they did not receive.

Houston police said early Thursday they were looking for a missing woman who was last seen at a Walmart in west Houston. Pauline Rideaux, 60, was last seen Wednesday in the 2700 block of S. Kirkwood, according to the Houston Police Department. Police said the woman has dementia and is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Rideaux was last seen wearing an orange UT windbreaker with black and blue on it. She was also wearing black pants and blue shoes. She was described as a black female with hazel eyes and black hair. She stands 5-feet-10 and weighs 180 pounds.

    • The American Bar Association has announced a further round of grants to be made in 2013 that will promote and support innovation in the delivery of civil legal aid.  These grants will go to the state Access to Justice Commissions.  The grants will fund projects in seven critical areas of innovation: expanding limited scope representation and other models for affordable services; improving language access and eliminating implicit cultural bias; employing public libraries as point of access for legal aid; enhancing fundraising outside the legal community; creating partnerships with health care and social services providers, government agencies and other new partners; preserving access for low-income people as courts implement e-filing; and increasing web-based delivery of pro bono services for self-represented litigants.  Eligible entities are state Access to Justice Commissions, which are formal entities that bring together the highest level of the state's courts, organized bar, and other stakeholders to support the expansion of access to civil justice for low income and disadvantaged people.  Applications for Grants to Promote the Creation of new Access to Justice Commissions are due by February 15, 2013; applications for Innovation Grants are due on May 1, 2013.
