Two disabled brothers are the latest victims of bike thieves in Phoenix. The men used their tricycles for errands like picking up groceries. The brothers are retired on a fixed income barely getting by. They splurged and bought the two bikes for $1,100.

Selma firefighters say they found an elderly woman basically confined to her bed in deplorable conditions - and now her daughter is facing felony charges. The 40-year-old suspect is charged with elder abuse for the handling of her mother. The alleged victim was hospitalized and released to another facility, rather than her home.

A Red Bluff man charged with slamming a bathroom door into the face of a 74-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison. The 32-year-old suspect, pled no contest to elder abuse in February and was sentenced in Tehama County Superior Court on Monday. The elderly man entered a Burger King restaurant bathroom when the suspect came out of a bathroom stall and slammed the door into the victim, knocking him to the floor and then slamming the door onto the man a second time.

A licensed elder care provider with 17 years of experience had a long history of complaint investigations, deficiency reports, citations, fines, and plans of correction. Still she never lost her license until an 88-year-old woman recently died with complications from a Stage IV bedsore under her supervision. The former care provider was charged with involuntary manslaughter and a second felony count of elder or dependent adult abuse, resulting in death. She faces up to 12 years in prison.

A 58-year-old Vernon Hills man contacted Niles police March 6 saying his father, who suffers from dementia, may have been victimized in a sweetheart theft scam by a Niles woman, who befriended the father in 2008.

A bill before the Legislature would address elder abuse in Maine by closing a loophole and clarifying the law to protect elders who might be victimized. The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held a hearing on the bill, which has the support of Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick, on Wednesday.

Petersburg Police are investigating the death of a disabled, middle-aged man. Officers said an acquaintance of the man called police this morning and asked them to do a welfare check.  Police said they didn’t know what type of situation they were getting into, so they started blocking off the street. The man was found dead at his home in the 100 block of Summit Street. His family told CBS 6 that officers would only tell them “somebody killed him.” They say the door to the home was kicked in and there was blood in the dining room.

The social and integration minister is demanding an explanation for the illegal confinement and surveillance of severely disabled citizens living in the group residence Møllen just outside of Kalundborg. A report in December by City Council investigative group Revas found that severely disabled residents, including an autistic woman who cannot speak, were placed in tiny rooms with locks on the outside.

    • The American Bar Association has announced a further round of grants to be made in 2013 that will promote and support innovation in the delivery of civil legal aid.  These grants will go to the state Access to Justice Commissions.  The grants will fund projects in seven critical areas of innovation: expanding limited scope representation and other models for affordable services; improving language access and eliminating implicit cultural bias; employing public libraries as point of access for legal aid; enhancing fundraising outside the legal community; creating partnerships with health care and social services providers, government agencies and other new partners; preserving access for low-income people as courts implement e-filing; and increasing web-based delivery of pro bono services for self-represented litigants.  Eligible entities are state Access to Justice Commissions, which are formal entities that bring together the highest level of the state's courts, organized bar, and other stakeholders to support the expansion of access to civil justice for low income and disadvantaged people.  Applications for Grants to Promote the Creation of new Access to Justice Commissions are due by February 15, 2013; applications for Innovation Grants are due on May 1, 2013.
