Guest speaker arrested at Downey seminar in elder abuse case
A man being investigated for elder financial abuse was arrested Saturday during a financial seminar in Downey where he was a guest speaker, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said. In August of last year, an elderly woman called the Lakewood sheriff’s station to report she believed the man, who was managing an investment account for the woman, had taken money from her.

A 56-year-old man was charged with capital murder after beating two of his roommates to death with a wheelchair armrest. The daughter of one of the victims had tried previously to get her father moved away from this roommate, but the facility did not respond to her request.

Deal Made for Elder Abuse Conviction
A 57-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman pleaded guilty to criminal mistreatment in an elder-abuse case that the prosecuting attorney called “disturbing”. The pair were originally charged with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree theft (of $20,000), and second-degree criminal mistreatment. The charges of manslaughter and theft were later dropped, but the charge of criminal mistreatment remained.

Violence Among Residents Jeopardizes Gahanna Nursing Home’s License
Several cases of resident-on-resident violence occurred during the last 5 months. The Ohio Department of Health has given the facility until May 12th to correct the problems. The facility should have tried harder to get at what was causing residents to become violent, said Beverly Laubert, the state’s long-term-care ombudsman. “They reacted to situations rather than trying to prevent them,” she said.

• The National Institute of Justice is seeking proposals for research and evaluation related to the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elderly individuals. Research that includes residents of residential care facilities also will be considered.
