4 Arrested in $3M Investment Scam

Four people were arrested this week in connection with an investment scam that cheated at least 28 people (including 13 elders) out of more than $3 million dollars. Together, the suspects face 105 felony counts that include multiple securities fraud, burglary, conspiracy and elder financial abuse.

Prosecutors: Suburban Caretaker Wouldn’t Help Elderly Client Off Floor
A 37-year-old man charged with caring for a 66-year-old man was arrested and charged with two felony counts of elder neglect and abuse after he admitted to a concerned nurse and responding police that he would not help the elder man off of the floor after falling. The home smelled of urine and police found empty bottles of alcohol and cigarettes scattered around.

Investigative article reviewing the complexity of choosing a nursing home for yourself or a loved one. The report found that local homes ranged from ones with numerous violations to others that were considered top-performers. Violations included sexual assaults, physical abuse, medication errors, and lack of necessary care.

Dementia Patient, 85, Found Hanged in His Care Home Bedroom
An 85-year-old dementia patient was found hanged to death in his bedroom. The man had lived in the home for seven months. A Manchester council spokeswoman said its Safeguarding Adults Board was ‘looking into’ the incident but would await a report from the coroner before deciding whether to launch a review.

• The Office for Victims of Crime released a solicitation yesterday under which it will fund up to ten awards of $150,000 to $750,000 to support organizations that use technology creatively to provide outreach and direct assistance to victims, particularly those who have never been served or for whom services are not readily available, nationally and/or internationally (for Americans abroad).
