An extensive 18-month long investigation into the death of a 93-year-old North Hollywood woman has resulted in the homicide arrest of her 61-year-old son, police said today. Police were suspicious from the beginning, because a coroner's investigation suggested that she had not died from natural causes, but rather long-term elder abuse and neglect.

Legislation adding financial exploitation to crimes covered by Missouri’s elder abuse law is ready for debate in the Missouri House of Representatives. The bill would make it a crime for certain people in authority to take advantage of the state of mind of someone 60 years or older for financial gain. The provision would apply to people who have guardianship, power of attorney or some other financial management role for seniors.

A new law to fight elder abuse is now in effect. Under the previous law, a person guilty of elder abuse could have the crime expunged from their record. But this is not an option with House Bill 4084, which was signed into law by Governor John Kitzhaber on March 27. The law states that the crime will permanently stay on a perpetrator’s record.

The businesses, in turn, give them out to customers.
