Former grand prix motorcycle-racing champion Joe Cubbage was sentenced to one year in jail for felony elder abuse. He was also ordered to pay restitution for everything he received from his parents from May 2009 to April 2010, including a $40,000 trip to Europe.

Wicomico City Council member Bob Culver cannot contact his mother for at least another 30 days following a hearing Friday morning. Culver’s mother filed a civil, domestic violence order against him in April. Culver has denied the charges, claiming that this was “more or less a family matter.”

It is estimated that Texas, senior citizens over the age of 65 make up 12 percent of the state’s population, but they account for approximately 35 percent of crime victims in the state. Most of the crimes committed against seniors are non-violent, but these non-violent crimes leave their scars just as if someone had robbed them at gunpoint.

A jury found a former owner of an adult home guilty of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated man that resulted in the man’s death. This follows an incident last year when a resident was accidentally scalded with hot water under the care of the facility. The staff made several decisions regarding the man’s medical care that ultimately led to his death 10 days later.

A former owner of The Claye Corporation, a group home for adults in Martinsville, has been found guilty of abuse and neglect of an incapacitated adult that resulted in death. A jury recommended the man be sentenced to five years’ incarceration.

A Virginia man was taken to the hospital in May of 2010, but not before he suffered cuts and bruises, four broken ribs, gangrene, head trauma, a hip fracture, hypothermia, severe malnutrition and extensive bedsores all over his body. He died three days after he reached the hospital. Family and experts now wonder if the man’s abuse at the hands of his caregiver could have been prevented.
