According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Maine has the oldest population in the
nation, with a median age of 42.7 years. Crimes against elders is largely
unreported in the U.S. and in Maine, where it is estimated that about 84
percent of elder abuse cases go unreported. An estimated five percent of
Maine’s elderly population were victims of abuse in 2009. Most abusers are
relatives, friends or caregivers — very few are strangers.

A developmentally disabled woman from
Portage and her mother broke down in tears Thursday after a judge told them the
disabled woman would not be allowed to leave jail to return home while her
theft case proceeds. The woman was arrested May 31 on charges of resisting law
enforcement, disorderly conduct and theft. She's accused of taking beer from a
refrigerator on a man's outdoor deck. The case attracted more attention after
it was revealed police had used a Taser twice on Patrick during the arrest.

her 80s and a man about 58 found dead Wednesday in a Glen Cove home on Milford
Lane. “It appears that the male is a suicide victim,” said Nassau County Det.
Lt. John Azzata, adding that he died of a gun shot wound and there were
multiple guns in the house. The female’s cause of death is still unknown,
pending an autopsy report, he said.
