Local officials are trying to raise awareness on a growing problem -- elder abuse. Nationwide, close to six million cases involving elder abuse is reported annually.  Nursing home incidents and financial theft are just a few examples. Officials in Saint Joseph County are setting up events this week to help educate the public.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Maine has the oldest population in the nation, with a median age of 42.7 years. Crimes against elders is largely unreported in the U.S. and in Maine, where it is estimated that about 84 percent of elder abuse cases go unreported. An estimated five percent of Maine’s elderly population were victims of abuse in 2009. Most abusers are relatives, friends or caregivers — very few are strangers.

A Branson man was charged with financial exploitation last week for taking advantage of his mother’s bank accounts, according to authorities. The suspect is charged with one count of financial exploitation of the elderly, a class B felony, for events starting in January 2010, according to police documents.

Jones St., Raleigh. State and federal agencies are teaming up for the event, a resource fair where attendees can pick up information from a variety of sources. Federal regulators will present a new curriculum, “Money Smart for Older Adults: Prevent Financial Exploitation.”

A man with dementia is behind bars amid allegations that he killed another dementia patient in a central Pennsylvania nursing home. A 53-year-old man is charged with killing 85-year-old Margaret Lechleiter in April.

A suspended lawyer was arraigned Friday morning in Superior Court on charges that she stole $144,989 from a now-deceased 87-year-old woman for whom she’d been appointed guardian. The suspect pleaded not guilty to three felony counts: elder exploitation, embezzlement and larceny over $1,500.

A developmentally disabled woman from Portage and her mother broke down in tears Thursday after a judge told them the disabled woman would not be allowed to leave jail to return home while her theft case proceeds. The woman was arrested May 31 on charges of resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and theft. She's accused of taking beer from a refrigerator on a man's outdoor deck. The case attracted more attention after it was revealed police had used a Taser twice on Patrick during the arrest.

Nassau and Glen Cove Police officials have provided new details of a woman in her 80s and a man about 58 found dead Wednesday in a Glen Cove home on Milford Lane. “It appears that the male is a suicide victim,” said Nassau County Det. Lt. John Azzata, adding that he died of a gun shot wound and there were multiple guns in the house. The female’s cause of death is still unknown, pending an autopsy report, he said.
