SPECIAL:  UN News Centre (June 15, 2013) Secretary-General urges protection of older persons from physical, psychological abuse

Governments, civil society and communities must re-examine their attitudes towards ageing and ensure older persons are protected from all forms of abuse, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed today, urging for measures to prevent this behaviour.  “Around the world, older persons are tragically subject to psychological, financial or physical abuse,” Mr. Ban said in his message marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

To help seniors guard against elder abuse the federal government – in a joint effort by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) – has produced a new tool to help prevent financial exploitation. The tool, a stand-alone training module that's part of FDIC's Smart Money guide, provides information to increase awareness among those 62 and older and their caregivers on how to prevent, identify and respond to elder financial exploitation.

The suspect is accused of failing to seek medical help for a 75-year-old woman who fell into a tub of scalding water in August 2010. The woman later died from her injuries.

She cannot go into any MB Financial Bank branch, or contact the victim, an elderly man, court records show.

The Iowa Board of Nursing Home Administrators alleges that a woman who served as administrator of the Pomeroy Care Center from September 1983 to October 2011, is guilty of professional incompetence.

“Missing” Elderly Man Found Inside Nursing Home

Burlington Township Police found an elderly man who was reported missing on Saturday. After police, staff and Mulligan's family searched the facility several times, investigators believed he had walked away. They then searched neighboring housing developments and surrounding wooded areas. Mulligan was eventually found unharmed inside the nursing home.
