Man arrested on suspicion of elder abuse

The Eureka Police Department arrested a man on suspicion of elder abuse while serving a search warrant for suspected drug activity on the 3400 block of Elizabeth Street on Wednesday. Eureka PD is asking anyone with information concerning suspected drug activity or other nuisances occurring in Eureka to call the Problem

Man Arrested on Elder Abuse, Fraud Charges

Truckee Police have arrested a 48-year-old man on multiple counts of check fraud, forgery, theft, burglary and financial elder abuse charges. Officers say they learned of the alleged crimes from family members. They say the suspect had been stealing money and other items from his family members for several months.

To "keep predatory trial attorneys from using punitive damages to inflate the cost of settlements in nursing home claims," the FCHA, which represents 500 of Florida’s nearly 700 nursing home facilities, is supporting a new bill sponsored by Senator Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, that would require plaintiffs to present "clear and convincing" evidence to a judge before being allowed to pursue punitive damages in court.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Aging are getting the word out about elder abuse. June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and in conjunction with that event, Communications Director Machelle Shaffer says they are focusing on two major topics, denial of critical care and self-neglect, both of which are considered a silent suffering. Shaffer says while June 15th is a good time to raise awareness of the dangers of elder abuse, their goal is to make people aware of it every single day.

Massachusetts Protective Services follows a policy of “self-determination” when investigating abuse complaints. If an elder is “of capacity,” even while being influenced by an abuser, the elder can “self-determine” the scope of Protective Service’s abuse investigation, limiting the people investigators contact when they research the complaint.

An educational program has been planned for June 12 in Goodhue County to raise awareness about elder abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be held June 15. It will feature informational booths and guest speakers, including Red Wing Police Chief Roger Pohlman, Red Wing attorney and interim mayor Lisa Bayley and others.

A Rankin County resident is going to prison for exploitation of an 85-year-old victim, announced Attorney General Jim Hood today. Kenneth A. Cauthen, 51, who has lived in both Hinds and Rankin Counties, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Judge John Emfinger in Rankin County Circuit Court to Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult, who  was 85- years- old at the time of the crime and suffering from dementia. Cauthen received a sentence of 10 years.

Sikeston DPS arrest a 22 year old Sikeston man for allegedly choking his grandmother. The victim who reported that her 22 year old grandson pushed and choked her after becoming angry over $40.  A neighbor ran to the victim’s aid when the she sounded the car alarm to summon help.

Local officials came together in Greenville to raise awareness about abuse of the elderly. June is elder abuse awareness month. Members of the Greenville Police Department and Mayor Allen Thomas joined the Pitt County Violence in Aging council for an awareness walk at Alice Keene Park.

House Bill 2205 adds lawmakers, attorneys, dentists, optometrists and chiropractors to the list of mandatory reporters. The duty would apply around the clock, and not just when the person is working in his or her professional capacity. Lawyers and clergy would not have to report abuse if the information was learned through privileged communications.

Hospital bosses say they are working hard to improve discharge procedures after an audit showed a list of errors. The audit covered the first three months of 2013, during which time two patients were discharged with their cannulas still in. One of these was taken back to their residential home with no discharge letter or medication, and in a wheelchair with no footplates or brakes. Another patient with dementia was sent home without their family being told. They were left on their own at home with their medication.

After narcotics investigators served a warrant, two men were arrested Friday morning on multiple methamphetamine charges at a home on West Curtis Street in Simpsonville, according to authorities and warrants. A vulnerable adult was also present in the home, which prompted a charge against one of the men.
