A new report finds as many as 1 in 5 seniors has a mental health or substance abuse problem. As the population rapidly ages over the next two decades, millions of Baby Boomers may have a hard time finding care and services for mental health problems such as depression because the nation lacks the doctors, nurses and other health workers trained for their needs, the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, said Tuesday.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s legislation to protect seniors from neglect and abuse by guardians passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with a 15-3 vote, paving the way for a vote in the full Senate. The Guardian Accountability and Senior Protection Act would protect seniors and persons with disabilities from neglect and financial exploitation by improving oversight and accountability for court-appointed guardians and conservators.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office this afternoon announced it will not re-file a misdemeanor assault charge against the San Francisco man acquitted last week of felony assault and elder abuse that resulted from a confrontation with the Los Gatos priest he claims brutally raped him and his brother as children.

The director of funeral home in Stockton that has been at the center of a fraud investigation was taken into custody last week on felony charges of elder financial abuse and grand theft. The suspect allegedly took thousands of dollars for funeral services that were never delivered.

A 70-year-old man is in custody after being charged with two counts of criminal abuse or neglect of an elderly person with a disability, which ultimately lead to the death of his wife. Witnesses reported that the man was often verbally abusive towards his wife, and it was suspected that his wife’s hospital visits for falls were actually caused by the suspect himself.

Cook County Sheriff's Police took two men into custody Wednesday morning. According to police sources, only one of the men is considered a suspect in what the Cook County Medical Examiner termed a homicide in an alleged elder abuse case dating back to August 2011.

Gov. Jay Nixon signed legislation yesterday intended to strengthen protections for elderly and disabled Missourians against financial exploitation. The Missouri Governor was at the South Side Senior Center to sign legislation concerning financial exploitation. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reports about one out of every five calls to the Elder Abuse Hotline deals with financial exploitation.

A former Denison nursing home employee accused of sexually assaulting a resident is now behind bars. Investigators said one of the residents of the Homestead of Denison accused Reynolds of the abuse last May. The Homestead's facility administrator said Reynolds was fired immediately and the victim was doing okay.

An 81-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of his 76-year-old wife. He allegedly shot his wife, then called police dispatchers and told them that he had just shot his wife in the head with a handgun. The man reported in March of 2011 that his wife attacked him and that he was afraid of her, but he refused to apply for a protective order against her.

A home health care worker was booked in Davis County Jail on four counts of fraud, two counts of credit card fraud and one count of elder abuse Monday following an investigation that lasted about two weeks. Police believe there may have been more victims.

Brenda Nicholas, a 46-year-old woman who prosecutors say is involved in a loosely organized crime group, was charged Monday in King County Superior Court with more than 50 criminal counts, most connected to her alleged bilking of an elderly Seattle woman out of $1 million.
