The “Grandparent Scam” involves preying on seniors by calling or emailing them, pretending to be a grandchild in trouble and begging them to wire cash for emergency expenses like bail money or airline tickets. Responsible organizations like AARP, Western Union, and Consumer Reports warn elders to beware of such phony phone calls and emails. Unfortunately, thousands of seniors have fallen victim to these scams, losing millions of dollars in the process

A elderly woman was told by the Illinois Department of Human Services that she was no longer eligible for services that could have kept her away from her husband. Because of this colossal gap in care, she died a slow, miserable death at the hands of her abuser. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide as the result of neglect.

The couple allegedly held the husband’s mother against her will for several months, failed to provide her with prescribed medications and did not seek medical attention after the woman fractured her hip.

A five-judge panel ruled that there was no evidence of undue influence, and that it appeared the real reason he’d excised the kids — who were left everything in an earlier will — was because they damaged the company while trying to keep it out of their stepmother’s hands, despite Aoki’s pleas for peace.
