You might have missed the mysterious story of the old woman whose mummified remains were found in her Gilbert home. It seems she died in 2010. Yet in 2011, the state of Arizona reported her alive and well.

The daughter of a 73-year-old woman charged with elder abuse last week claimed the condition of the "filthy and deplorable" apartment she shared with her mother had only deteriorated in the past few weeks. Adult Protective Services found new housing for the mother.

The Obama administration submitted a modest $25 million proposal to fund the Elder Justice Act, a law enacted in 2010 but grounded by a lack of funding. The administration’s request would fund grants to test ways to detect and prevent elder abuse, strengthen data collection and support research into the issue.
