Stacked task force useless on ALF reform
http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/07/28/2916401/stacked-task-force-useless-on.html
The author expresses deep frustration with the ineffectiveness of the task force charged with reforming Florida’s assisted living facilities (ALFs). “Gov. Rick Scott filled most of the seats with ALF industry insiders and advocates and two legislators famously cozy with ALF operators. . . Former Secretary of Elder Affairs Bentley Lipscomb warned The Herald last year that the workgroup would hardly do much that might inconvenience ALFs. ‘Based on what I’ve seen so far, I don’t expect much out of any of this,’ he said.”

New Illinois laws aim to protect elderly
http://www.sacbee.com/2012/07/29/4671119/new-illinois-laws-aim-to-protect.html
New laws signed by Gov. Pat Quinn this weekend are aimed at protecting the elderly in Illinois by increasing oversight of caregivers and making it easier for authorities to respond to cases of abuse or neglect. One of the new pieces of legislation allows prosecutors to ask a court to freeze a suspect's assets if he is charged with financial exploitation of an elderly person. That's meant to keep a defendant from spending stolen money before restitution is collected.

Elderly risk abuse in their own homes
http://www.eagletribune.com/latestnews/x1495164019/Elderly-risk-abuse-in-their-own-homes
Massachusetts is one of a handful of states in the nation that does not license or regulate the burgeoning private-pay home care industry, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting has found. These are agencies that do not work under either a federal or state contract, but provide assistance like companionship, housekeeping and cooking to families that shoulder the costs alone.

Ohio nursing-home citations jump as government payments cut
http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/07/30/ohio-nursing-home-citations-jump-as-government-payments-cut.html
During the state’s past fiscal year, Ohio’s nursing homes were cited nearly twice as often as in the previous year for putting patients at serious risk of harm. The jump in “immediate jeopardy” citations in the 2011-12 fiscal year coincides with cuts in the facilities’ Medicaid payments in July 2011 and a Medicare rate cut a few months later. But officials say it’s too soon to say whether the smaller government payments are undermining the quality of nursing-home care.
