An elderly woman is hospitalized with what’s being described as life-threatening injuries. The woman had told a boy to stop harassing a goose at Golden Gate Park when a man, believed to be the boy’s father, pushed the woman, knocking her to the ground. Police are looking for the suspect.

To spotlight June 15 as "Elder Abuse Awareness Day," ACNB Bank offered tips on how senior citizens can protect themselves from elder financial abuse. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, seniors throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation.

Lancaster County’s Office on Aging expects to see more cases of financial crimes for the fiscal year that ended last month. The agency estimates it’s investigated 1,500 elder abuse incidents in that 12 month span – an increase of about 300 cases.

A man who was appointed as legal guardian for a 79-year-old Northeast Side woman is accused of taking advantage of her instead, by stealing tens of thousands of dollars from her. The suspect was arrested on a charge of misappropriation of fiduciary funds.

The federal government is spending $350,000 to combat elder abuse in New Brunswick. The money will go to the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes in Fredericton for a project to educate nursing home employees and seniors on what elder abuse is and how it can be prevented.

Speaking at the recent celebration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15) in Rundu, Haingura said older persons are an integral part of society because of their expertise and wisdom.

Casting doubt on an ambitious state plan to move thousands of mentally ill adults out of nursing homes and into community-based programs, a federal court monitor reported this week that many of the patients don't want to leave the facilities while others were found to be unfit for the community placements.
