Scammers often target elders, but police said the people who take advantage of seniors most often are the people they know and love. That’s especially true when it comes to financial fraud, according to Scott Sterling with the State Office of Public Advocacy.

Sacramento police say neighbor complaints about questionable individuals hanging around a home led to the discovery of an 85-year-old bedridden woman living in squalor. The woman’s 56-year-old husband has been arrested and charged with elder abuse.

A 56-year-old Sacramento man was arrested Thursday after police say they found his 85-year-old wife soaked in urine and living in “inhuman” conditions. A neighbor reported suspicious people hanging out and living in the backyard of the home and complained of drug activity.

A woman accused of stealing from an 87-year-old man with dementia will not be prosecuted. The Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office decided there was not enough evidence to file formal charges against Mary Archambault, 58. She was arrested in January on charges of exploitation of the elderly, grand theft and scheme to defraud. Orlando police said she bought a $30,000 car with the man's money and cashed nearly $67,000 worth of his checks.

Dunwoody Police are looking for Michael Thomas Pavlic, a local 71-year-old Alzheimer's patient that's been missing since last Monday. He was last seen at 10 p.m. driving a red 2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix. The Georgia license tag is 593LAP, and he was traveled in an unknown direction, police say. He was wearing plaid shorts and a T-shirt. He suffers from mild Alzheimer’s, and he's not currently carrying his medication, according to authorities.

Senior Services Plus will play host this week to a conference to heighten community awareness about abuse issues. The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Oasis Women’s Center and the 3rd Judicial Circuit Family Violence Prevention Council also are sponsoring the event. A panel of experts will join Madison County Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder and State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons to answer questions and concerns on the topic.

In 2011, Illinois received 6,205 reports of suspected financial abuse and exploitation of senior citizens. The numbers have generally risen in recent years and are up 14 percent from 2007. Financial exploitation accounts for 57 percent of reported abuse cases against older adults.

The owner of a western Maryland assisted-living center faces criminal charges and a licensing investigation after an 84-year-old Alzheimer's patient crashed through the unfinished floor of a second-story room into the dining room below, police and state regulators said Monday. He is charged with one count of reckless endangerment and two counts of abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult.

A Clayville man was arrested for allegedly stealing over a quarter million dollars from an elderly woman. A police investigation found that the suspect closed several of the elderly woman’s accounts and transferred the money into his own business and personal accounts. The suspect was the elderly woman’s accountant and had power of attorney.

A local accountant is accused of scamming about $294,000 from an 85-year-old client. The case was initiated on April 30 when the victim, who is in a local nursing home, noticed inconsistencies in her financial accounts. She contacted her financial adviser and he agreed that there was reason to be concerned.

An at-risk adult who was reported missing has been found safe and was returned home Sunday evening. The alert was issued for 85-year-old Emery Saunders, who was last seen Sunday morning.  Police lifted the alert just before 9 p.m. Sunday.

A missing adult alert has been cancelled for an elderly Sylvania man who suffers from dementia and other medical conditions. Irving Hall, 75, has was reported missing from his home in northeast Ohio, Monday. He was found safe in Toledo, according to authorities.

Care worker Nicola Hoole has been found guilty of slapping a 90-year-old dementia sufferer she was looking after. The 45-year-old hit the elderly resident at Pine Meadows Care Home, in Leek, after he lashed out at her as she gave him a bath. She will be sentenced August 31.
