Funding Opportunities:

·        Applications are being accepted for grants from New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming, administered by the OMG Center for Collaborative Learning, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Up to 10 grants of $100,000 each over two years will support junior investigators from needy communities who projects focus on one of the foundation’s priorities: childhood obesity; coverage; human capital; pioneer; public health; quality/equality; and vulnerable populations

·        The Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund, administered by Cities of Service with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to help cities use volunteering to tackle pressing local challenges. Grant sizes will range from $25,000 to $100,000 with larger amounts researved for cities with multiple projects. Any mayor whose city is a member of the Cities of Service coalition is eligible to apply on behalf of the city and its partners.

·        The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

·        The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

An elderly Auburn widow is suing her tax adviser, claiming he urged her to put $1.5 million into an investment fund that he controlled — and later stopped making guaranteed payments. The lawsuit seeks the return of the entire investment, plus triple damages.

A 73-year-old man is accused of embezzling money from an elderly person in order to pay restitution for a prior elder abuse case. He is being held on charges of elder abuse, embezzlement, grand theft and burglary. One of his alleged victims now fears she may lose her house to foreclosure.

A Menifee man was arrested last month in connection with an investigation into alleged elder abuse and theft. Two victims have been identified in the Lake Elsinore and Homeland areas, with losses totaling over $50,000. Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Glenn Johnson at 951-201-0540

ELDER FRAUD: Convicted con man faces new charges

A man has been charged with conning two women in their 70s out of tens of thousands of dollars, using tearful please that he needed the money for life-saving surgeries. In reality, the man used the money to buy a Mercedes, meals at restaurants, and shopping trips. In 1997 the same man was convicted of nine counts of grand theft and was sentenced to two years in prison. His victims were quoted as saying he’s sure to con again.

A 55-year-old Riverside County man has been charged with conning two women out of tens of thousands of dollars. He was convicted years ago in Orange County in a similar scam. He is now being charged with several counts including theft by false pretense, grand theft and elder abuse. He is being held with no bail about set.

Last month, for the first time, the 2011 nursing home inspection reports - complete with information about health or fire code deficiencies - were uploaded to NursingHomeCompare.org, the website run by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or CMS. Several California companies have united to try to improve on what the federal government has started.

Investigators are searching for a driver whose car struck and killed a 90-year-old woman with dementia who had wandered from her home in Waterbury. The woman was struck at about 1:30 a.m. near her home on Saturday. Investigators are trying to identify the suspect and urge anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers at 203-755-1234.

Law enforcement in Iowa expresses frustration at their difficulties in catching con artists who target seniors. Many of these criminals are overseas and out of the jurisdiction of local law enforcement. Instead the Iowa Attorney General’s Office concentrates their efforts on shutting down the avenues by which fraudsters work, such as wire-transfer services.

A couple in their 30s both entered pleas of not guilty after being arrested for knowingly exploiting an adult for over $300, a felony charge. The woman was allegedly working for a 92-year-old dementia patient as her caretaker. She is accused of taking the woman’s ATM card and giving it to her boyfriend, who racked up more than $1500 worth of charges.
