FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Social Services

Deadline: August 10, 2012

State Giving Program from the Wal-Mart Foundation. The State Giving Program awards grants starting at $25,000 each for organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The foundation has four areas of focus: education, workforce development and economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. The foundation seeks to support projects that incorporate hunger relief into one of these four areas. State advisory councils made up of local Wal-Mart associates represent each state, including Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. The councils determine the needs within each state, review all eligible grant applications, and make recommendations to the foundation. A caretaker has been arrested after a 101-year-old man was found inside a car in a California parking lot as temperatures soared to 100 degrees.

A 46-year-old woman was arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of elder abuse after leaving a 101-year-old man in a hot car in front of the Walmart in Clovis, police said. The man was taken to the hospital, and is now in stable condition. An hour after arriving on scene, officers found the woman in the McDonald's inside the store. She was arrested and booked into Fresno County Jail.

A man was arrested for allegedly committing elder abuse and grand theft after a 72-year-old woman reported that a large amount of jewelry and other items had been taken from her home while she was gone. Police arrested a 44-year-old family member, who had allegedly pawned one of the items at a local pawn shop.

The Marin County Financial Abuse Specialist Team, a collaboration between Marin County Aging and Adult Services and the Elder Financial Protection Network, is sponsoring a workshop on elder abuse prevention. The workshop, "Be Wise, Avoid Scams, Fraud and Identity Theft," will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Division of Aging & Adult Services.

During a post-Sunday Services meeting of elders at North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church on July 15, a confrontation between feuding parties resulted in Richmond police responding to the scene. An 82-year-old man was hospitalized with injuries after a 50-year-old male church deacon “violently pushed” him and “ripped” a microphone from his hands.

The Sanford woman who has Alzheimer's, dementia and diabetes vanished this morning after she was seen with a stranger. Although she was believed to be endangered deputies say she was reunited with her family in good condition.
