FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: Social Services

State Giving Program from the Wal-Mart Foundation. The State Giving Program awards grants starting at $25,000 each for organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The foundation has four areas of focus: education, workforce development and economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. The foundation seeks to support projects that incorporate hunger relief into one of these four areas. State advisory councils made up of local Wal-Mart associates represent each state, including Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. The councils determine the needs within each state, review all eligible grant applications, and make recommendations to the foundation. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is seeking information on incidents of exploitation of the elderly, including financial exploitation to include in the Federal Register.

A Tucson woman is facing up to 13.75 years in prison after admitting she abused and stole from a bedridden woman who later died. In addition to pleading guilty to vulnerable adult abuse and attempted theft/financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, the woman also pleaded guilty to abusing one of her children. She could receive probation or prison on two of the charges, but is facing a mandatory prison sentence of between one year and 2.5 years for abusing the victim during a four-year period.

A Tucson woman is facing up to nearly 14 years in prison after admitting she abused and stole from a bedridden woman who later passed away. The victim died November 8, but doctors were unable to determine if her death was the result of neglect or multiple sclerosis.

A retired El Dorado County sheriff's deputy was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for stealing more than $300,000 by falsely claiming that the union he headed had made charitable contributions, including to the families of four Oakland police officers shot and killed in 2009. He was convicted of three counts of embezzlement, elder fraud and perjury.

A woman was found guilty of felony elder abuse likely to cause great bodily injury, and additional charges of elder abuse and dependent adult abuse for allegedly assaulting a 46-year-old woman last December. The perpetrator was not the victim’s caregiver, but she had helped the victim occasionally.

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon offered an apology to members of the Chinese community last week after his office failed to respond adequately to complaints from Chinese-speaking victims of elder financial abuse.

Afraid of abuse or discrimination, LGBT seniors who are open about their relationships with friends and families may hide that part of their lives if they enter nursing homes or assisted living facilities. A documentary was shown in three South Florida locations, which hopes to shed light on the issue.

A 52-year-old Central Peoria woman faces up to 30 years in prison for allegedly trying to set the nursing home she lived in on fire. She was indicted on charges of aggravated arson, residential arson, arson and criminal damage to property in connection to the July 3 incident.

A day-long summit underway in Des Moines is focused on the topic of elder abuse. Governor Branstad addressed summit participants early this morning. Iowa now ranks as the 9th oldest state in the country. In the last half of 2011 there were almost 3300 reports of abuse to dependent adults in Iowa, ranging from denial of care and exploitation to physical and sexual abuse.

The Home Instead Senior Care network, which has offices in Sewickley, Wexford, Franklin Park, and McCandless has teamed up with the National Association of Triads to launch the Protect Seniors from Fraud program. Included in the program is a free Senior Fraud Protection Kit that contains a number of important tools to help families assess how likely their senior is to be a potential target of a scam and advice on how to protect them.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested five former employees at a nursing home in Johnson City over allegations of mistreatment of dependent adults. Three of the suspects were each indicted on two counts of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a dependent adult. The other two were indicted on one count of failing to report abuse, neglect or exploitation of a dependent adult.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Wednesday released the first-ever study of crimes against the elderly as reported by Tennessee law enforcement agencies through the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) from 2009 through 2011. The report is an analysis of Group A offenses classified as crimes against persons and crimes against property where the victim of the crime was age 65 or older.

Lime Trees Nursing Home in Sheffield is to close after the City Council and NHS Sheffield have withdrawn their funding of the home. It follows an earlier investigation into care standards at the centre. Following preliminary investigations the owners brought in a new management team to improve standards. However, despite this commitment to improvements, both the City Council and NHS Sheffield have indicated they are withdrawing support.
