NCEA Newsfeed – Thursday, September 13, 2012

Funding Opportunities:

  • The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

The son of a woman bilked out of $90,000 has advice for other grown children concerned about their aging parents: Get involved sooner rather than later. The Arizona Attorney General's Office says reports of elder abuse in the state are up 150 percent in the past decade, with financial exploitation and fraud the most common forms of abuse.

In a class action lawsuit, and elderly man claims that Millennium Trust Co. helped “fraud promoters” steal millions of dollars from elderly people in an IRA-based Ponzi scheme. The lead plaintiff claims he lost his entired $225,000 investment, and that the class lost at least $5 million in the scheme, which was based on self-directed investment retirement accounts, or SDIRAs.

One in every nine people over the age of 60 is the victim of some form of elder abuse, including financial exploitation, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. A free educational seminar called, “Outsmarting Financial Fraud and Elder Abuse,” was offered to the public and received rave reviews. It is one of five seminars being held this week alone in Maine.

A Baltimore man who worked in a Windsor Mill group home was arrested Wednesday after being indicted by a grand jury, authorities said. He allegedly abused a vulnerable adult three times over a two-day period this spring. Abuse of a vulnerable adult is a misdemeanor punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each offense. Assault in the second degree is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine for each count.

St. Paul Man Sentenced to 13 Years for Raping Vulnerable Adult

A St. Paul man will spend over a decade in prison for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl in his charge at an adult foster care home in Burnsville.
