Funding Opportunities:

  • The Marisla Foundation focuses on supporting women's programs dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence and vocational training.  The objective of the Marisla Foundation's Human Services Program is to assist women, primarily regarding their physical, mental and financial health.  Giving is national in focus, but the Marisla Foundation shows preference for California funding.  Last year, the Foundation distributed $36 million in grants.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

  • The Johnson Controls Foundation announced program grants to support education, health and hospitals, community funds, social services, including aid to the handicapped, care of children, and the aged; and civic, arts, and cultural organizations.  Johnson Controls tends to focus in areas where they have a presence, but will fund on a national basis. Extra consideration is given to organizations or institutions in which Johnson Controls employees are involved and are contributing their time and/or money.  Funds can be applied to annual campaigns, building/renovation (bricks and mortar), capital campaigns, continuing support, emergency funds employee matching gifts, employee-related scholarships, general/operating support, matching/challenge support, and seed money.  The Foundation distributed $6.7 million in grants in 2011.  Funding is limited to nonprofits.

An Oceanside man accused of assaulting his father will appear in court on December 4. The suspect allegedly fired a pellet gun at Oceanside police officers when they attempted to detain him in May, and could face life in prison if convicted.

An elderly Parkmerced woman was conned out of $5,900 after thieves reportedly convinced her that she had caused a car crash. The 98-year-old woman told police she was pulling out of a parking space when a man and woman approached her, claiming that she had damaged their car. The female suspect claimed she was pregnant and told the victim that she would lose her driver’s license if insurance companies were to get involved.

Colorado is one of only four states that does not have mandatory reporting. To address this pressing need, the city of Fort Collins Human Relations Commission and other support agencies are hosting a forum to explore the local situation. The “Make It Stop: Elder Abuse Forum” will be held on Oct. 22 at the Fort Collins Senior Center.

The son of a man with dementia who was found after disappearing for several days at Red River Gorge now faces felony charges. The man is behind bars after allegedly leaving his elderly father with dementia unattended in June.

A former Certified Nursing Assistant at the Armenian Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica Plain was arraigned today in connection with the alleged assault of a 70-year-old disabled resident at the facility. The 48-year-old woman is charged with assault and battery on an elderly person. The suspect allegedly struck the victim, who has suffered a stroke and has long-term cognitive impairment, twice on the chest with her hand while the victim was lying in her bed.

An Independence man whose dead mother was discovered partially stuck to a reclining chair pleaded guilty today to elder abuse and forgery. The man will spend one year in the Jackson County Jail. Prosecutors had originally charged the suspect with involuntary manslaughter.

In what was apparently a crime of revenge, a 73-year-old woman was robbed, pummeled, and raped while bird-watching in broad daylight in the middle of Central Park. This incident highlights the often overlooked crime of elder rape. A mental-health clinician and sociologist claims that women over 65 were not included in studies concerning rape until about 10 years ago, and even now there is little data on this subject that has been analyzed.

Police are looking into possible charges in connection with a man's alleged mistreatment of his 93-year-old mother.  When his mother fell off the toilet and became covered in feces, he let her lay there for over an hour as she waited for the on-call home health nurse to arrive. The suspect’s mother has recently undergone hip surgery. The nurse's aide told police that after they got his mother up, he began yelling at her to "just die."

A man had dementia and stopped driving months ago, but he could still make it to the golf course on his own. He was traveling in the outside lane when he suddenly veered left, into the path of a Ford pickup in the inside lane. He was thrown from the cart and died later at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson.
