Updated: 45 cats discovered in Royerton home during investigation of man’s death

A death investigation of a 69-year-old man Thursday morning led to the discovery of 45 cats within a Royerton home, officials said.  Sgt. John Holding with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office said emergency officials responding to the man's death reported his home was filled with cats and was covered in feces and urine.

Appeals court overturns adult abuse case

The name of an adult care worker in eastern Iowa will be removed from the state's dependent adult abuse registry after the Iowa Court of Appeals concluded the state failed to prove the worker engaged in a negligent act.  The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals had found the adult care worker committed dependent adult abuse on a 95-year-old woman who had called for help. The victim complained that the adult care worker grabbed her arm causing a large bruise.

A son did not realize that his 83-year-old father was sending money to a Jamaican scam artist to cover fees related to his supposed prize since at least last July.  Piecing together the state of his father’s finances today, the son believes his father’s lost, at the least, $109,000.

Couple arrested in elder abuse, exploitation

On September 16, 2013, a husband and wife were arrested on charges of Elder Abuse, Elder Exploitation and Theft, related to the care of a 64-year-old male disabled victim and an 85-year-old female victim.  During the investigation, detectives discovered that, in addition to not providing proper physical care, the accused husband was accessing the both victim’s bank accounts and withdrawing large sums of money for his personal use.

Wilmington adult care facility hit with sanctions

Elderhaus PACE, an adult day care facility in Wilmington, is operating under a provisional license and has not been allowed to admit new enrollees since Sept. 1. The sanctions were handed down by the state on Aug. 20.  The sanctions resulted from an incident in June, when a patient was left in a transportation van for more than six hours, prompting criminal charges against the employee.

A Vermont State Police expert in computer forensics testified Wednesday that the 83-year-old victim’s computer was used to search for credit card information in the hours before her collapse into a hypoglycemic coma.  39-year-old woman of Bennington, N.H., is charged with murder, elder abuse and six counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, with prosecutors claiming she injected the victim with insulin.

Rise in reports of vulnerable adult abuse in Kent

The article states that the Health and Social Care Information Centre figures show a 22% rise, with 2,865 reported cases in the last financial year, compared to 2,341 the year before in Kent.  Of all the reported cases in Kent and Medway, 705 were reports of financial abuse.

In Canada, various employees of an elder care facility in Peterborough, Ontario, were suspended and then fired for incidents of care center abuse against an elderly resident after the resident’s son obtained video from a hidden camera in his mother’s room.  The article states that Camille Parent, son of the victim, wanted these employees to be charged.

Davis mother, son face trial for murder of disabled man

Cecil Wacholz died at Sutter Davis Hospital on Oct. 27, 2012 due to "severe neglect," according to authorities. said to be mentally retarded, with an IQ of 70 -- suffered from malnutrition, dehydration, hypothermia, severe bedsores and other maladies, causing him to die of septic shock, said former Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash. He succumbed two weeks after being admitted to the hospital.  James Mattos, 53, and his mother Darlene Mattos, 78, face several charges stemming from his death.

Man allegedly recorded abuse of disabled adult

A man could spend up to a decade behind bars after being accused of enticing a developmentally disabled patient to hit another developmentally disabled patient, according to investigators.  Investigators said King recorded the incident on his cell phone.

A McCreary County man has been arrested and charged with two counts of knowing neglect of a vulnerable adult.  Personnel at the Oakwood Manor facility notified an investigator with the OAG Department of Criminal Investigators Monday morning after learning about the incident.

Ex-worker accused of abusing disabled adults at Beatrice center seeks new venue, judge

A former Beatrice State Developmental Center worker accused of abusing developmentally disabled adults who lived at the center is asking for a change of venue and for a new judge.  Matthew Pangborn was sentenced last October to 15 to 23 years in prison after being convicted in July 2012 of four counts of abuse of a vulnerable adult, one count of attempted abuse, three counts of strangulation and one count of attempted strangulation. He was accused of beating and choking residents when he worked at the Beatrice State Developmental Center in 2011.

East TN woman trapped 3 years in home full of garbage, feces

A bedridden woman was rescued this week from her home in east Tennessee after she was found living amongst piles of garbage and her own feces.  The 48-year-old victim told detectives she'd been living in the conditions for about three years.  The home had no usable restroom, and in three years, she'd never been taken out of the house.

Cocke County firefighters had to cut a large hole in a wall to get in and rescue the 48-year-old woman from her house on Old Sevierville Highway in Newport that was covered in piles of garbage and her own feces.  The mother has been charged with physical abuse, or gross negligence of an impaired adult.

Winterbourne View: a reminder that abuse must always be challenged

In the months that followed the horrific revelations of abuse at Winterbourne View, states Simon Parkinson, Director of External Relations and Communities for Mencap, the Care Quality Commission investigated 145 similar units and a number of social care residential services across the country.  What it found was 50 per cent of the services not only failing to meet basic standards around care and welfare, but also failing to meet standards around protecting people from abuse.

The article states that a settlement yesterday in a class action lawsuit is being well-received by many former residents of the Huronia Regional Centre in Orillia.

The province has agreed to pay $35 million to those residents, many of whom suffered neglect and abuse while living here.

A federal district court in California has dismissed a claim brought under a long-term care insurance (LTCI) policy for statutory financial elder abuse, ruling that a “basic denial of insurance coverage” was never contemplated as a form of financial elder abuse.  The court dismissed the claim for financial elder abuse without leave to amend.

The Suffolk County Police Department has issued a Silver Alert for an 87-year-old man suffering from dementia.  The Suffolk County man was last seen standing in the driveway of his house at 8 Southhaven Avenue, Mastic, in the early morning on September 18.

Half of the HIV/AIDS population in the United States will be 50 or older by 2015, a pivotal development that brings new challenges to the treatment and prevention of the disease, experts told a congressional panel Wednesday.  Drug resistance, other diseases, high rates of depression and a lack of prevention, screening and early diagnosis could all pose significant problems as the population of Americans with HIV or AIDS ages, they said during a hearing of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.

Dundas parents lead fight for developmentally delayed adult children

Parents of developmentally disabled adult children urged Ontario legislators Thursday to find ways to help reduce a 20-year waiting list for housing that keeps growing.  Some parents are told they have to die before their adult children qualify for housing, and many young people end up being warehoused in long-term care homes with no one in their age group and no programs for them, said Martha Fox of Dundas, Ont.
